Disassemble and assemble procedure is similar for front and rear axles. Use
JDG10027 844J Axle Kit for disassemble and assemble.
Disassemble and assemble procedure can be performed with axle installed on
machine.

Three gear planet pinion shown in illustrations, axle is a four gear planet
pinion (50).

1. CAUTION:
Prevent crushing injury from heavy component. Support planetary
gear case cover (31) with lifting device before removing from axle.
Sun gear (27) may remain engaged with planet pinions when
removing planetary gear case cover.

Mark housing and components to aid in assembly.

Remove plug (32) and cap screws (39 and 40).

The inner bearing seal will have to be removed to do rolling drag
torque test. Seal will be replaced after test is completed.

19. Clean and inspect parts. Repair or replace parts as necessary.

housing. Tighten axle housing hub cap screws to specification.

If necessary, install two bearing outer races (6 and 9) in planetary gear case housing.

Heat outer bearing (9) and install on ring gear (12).

25. IMPORTANT:
The rolling drag check must be used to determine correct spacer. If
hub carrier, hub or internal gear carrier have not been replaced, it is
recommended that you reinstall original spacer for rolling drag test.

Install spacer (7).

26. NOTE:
JDG10137 Thread Protector is only required to screws on the first
couple of threads, do not attempt to fully install.

Install JDG10137 Thread Protector on hub (1) to protect threads.

Install ring gear (12).

28. IMPORTANT:
Slotted nut and JDG10141 Nut Wrench will align in one position
only. Be sure nut wrench is properly engaged before using.

Tighten slotted nut (47) to specification using JDG10141 Nut Wrench and JDG10142 Nut
Wrench Spanner.

29. IMPORTANT:
When reusing bearings, try to find the lower rolling drag torque
specification value. If the required rolling drag torque is not
obtained, use corresponding spacer. After this adjustment the hub
will have to be removed to install the bearing seal.

Check rolling drag torque.

Rolling drag torque equals force times radius.

• Measure radius of planetary gear case housing.
• Wrap string around planetary gear case housing and measure rolling drag torque
using spring scale.
• Compare measured rolling drag torque to specification.

• If rolling drag torque is below specification, replace existing spacer with thinner
spacer. Repeat procedure until measurement is within specification.
• If rolling drag torque is above specification, replace existing spacer with thicker
spacer. Repeat procedure until measurement is within specification.

30. Remove planetary gear case housing.

Apply high flex form-in-place gasket to seal (5). Install seal using JDG10138 Sealer
Installer.

Record position of oil supply holes on hub shaft (see arrows).

Do not damage O-rings during installation. Oil supply holes on brake
piston and hub shaft must align.

If the required brake pack clearance specification is not
obtained, install thinner outer separator plates on the piston
and backing plate side of the brake pack.

• Remove snap ring.

Starting with separator plate, install separator plate (24) and alternating brake disk (25).
Repeat until all plates and disks are installed.

The lead-in radius or chamfered I.D. edge of the bearing inner race
must be towards gear case cover (planet pinion carrier).

59. IMPORTANT:
Try to find the higher value when doing end play measurement on
sun gear shaft.

• Measure distance (Dimension A) from hub flange to end of sun gear as shown,
using JDG10228 Straight Edge.

Measure distance (Dimension B) from gear case housing inner cover flange to
center thrust washer as shown, using JDG10229 Gauge Blocks and JDG10228
Straight Edge.
• Subtract Dimension B from Dimension A.
-: Sun Gear End Play

Example

Dimension A 6.00 mm (0.24) in.)

Dimension B -5.50 mm (0.22) in.)

Sun Gear End Play 0.50 mm (0.20) in.)

• Compare measured value to specification. Install appropriate thrust washer to

meet specification.

place during assembly.

Install rigid form-in-place gasket on gear case cover mating surface.

Install gear case cover (planet pinion carrier).

63. Install cap screws (39 and 40). Tighten to specification.
