Conjugation of verbs
Verbs are either regular, irregular, or special.

Regular
- no change in the stem word.
- verb is conjugated based on the subject.
- take the root word of the verb by removing -en then add the corresponding ending based on
the proper pronoun.
a. If the root word ends with (t/d/m), retain the -e, then add the proper ending.
b. if the root word ends with ß/s/t, same rule except with du,er,es,sie,ihr where you
add -t after removing -en. Ex. heißen to du/er/es/sie/ihr heißt.

Negating
- Kein – no; nicht – not.
A. Kein – you negate: indefinite articles in front of ein, eine, einen; nouns with no articles in
front.
- Pattern: kein is located before the noun.
Ex. Das ist ein haus. > Das ist kein Haus; Iche habe eine Schwester. > ich habe keine
Schwester; Wir verkaufen Autos. > Wir verkaufen keine Autos; Ich habe Fieber. > Ich habe
kein Fieber.
B. Nicht – to negate verbs, adjectives, adverbs, proper nouns, nouns with a definite article in
front of (der, die, das), and nouns with a possessive pronoun in front of (mein, meine)
- Pattern: V + nicht
Ex. I will not see you. > Ich werde dich sehen nicht! (S+MV + O +IV)
Ich schlafe. > ich schlafe nicht.; Das Haus ist alt. > Das Haus ist nicht alt.
- The position of the ‘nicht’ in a sentence depends on what you negate.
1. nicht always follows the verb ‘sein’. Ex. Ich bin Thomas. > ich bin nicht Thomas.
2. nicht follows the verb of the sentence except if the verb is a separable verb, then
nicht goes in front of the prefix. Ex. Ich gehe. > Ich gehe nicht.; Iche sehe fern. > Ich
sehe nicht fern.
3. nicht follows a pronoun or an object which can be substituted by a pronoun. Ex. ich
sehe dich. > ich sehe dich nicht.; Sie kennt Mr. Wolf. > Sie kennt Mr. Wolf nicht.
4. nicht follows the noun in a question. Ex. Wollen Sie gehen? > Wollen Sie nicht
gehen?; Sprichst du Deutsch? > Sprichst du nicht Deutsch?
5. nicht follows a specific time. Ex. Wir kämpfen heute gegen euch. > wir kämpfen
nicht gegen euch. Except if you use a preposition like “um, am” for the specific time,
then nicht goes in front of the specific time. Ex. Ich komme um 8.00 Uhn zu dir. > Ich
komme nicht um 8.99 Uhr zu dir.
6. Special rule for nicht. When the speaker wants to emphasize a special aspect. Ex.
Anna singt gerne. > Nicht Anna singt gerne.
Trenbarre verben
- Separable verbs. Stress of the sound is found infront.
- The prefixes under the trenbarre verben are: ab, an, auf, aus, bei, ein, fort, mit. nach,von, zu,
weg, fern, hin, her, vorbei, zurück, and zusammen.
Ex. anziehen – to wear; aufräumen – to cleam, ausliehen – to borrow
- Conjugation of the verb is the same.
- The prefix is placed or positioned at the end of the sentence.
Ex. Ich ziehe das Hemd an; Marc räumt das Zimmer auf.
Ex. She opens the window of my car. > Sie macht das Fenster meines Autos auf. (IV is
aufmachen)

The children of the man choose many things. > Die kinder des Mannes wahlen Sachen aus.
(verb is auswahlen)
I will come back on Monday. > Ich werde am Montag zuruckkomen. (Note that the
zuruckkommen is not separated and is located at the end because of the MV)
Untrenbarre verben
- Sentence pattern: S + V + O (the normal sentence pattern)
- Sound is never stressed; never separates the verb.
Ex. besuchen – to visit; suchen – to search./ Er buscht seine Freundin. (besuchen is conjugated
without separating the verb.
She passes the exam. > Sie besteht die Prüfung. (verb is bestehen)
His doctor orders the medication urgently. > Sein Artzt vestellt die Medikation dringend.

- Shows the connection or relation between words. In German language, it has a specific
preposition in each case. The preposition will directly affect the next noun
(aricles/pronouns/adjective)

Sentence pattern: S + V + D + A + TeKaMoLo
Ex. Brandon (S) walks (V) in the park (LO) very slowly (MO) because of his knees (KO) today (TE).
Brandon läuft heute wegen seiner knie sehr langsam in den Park.
In the above sentence, sentence pattern can change depending on the word you want to
emphasize. The sentence pattern will be Adv. + V + S + the remaining adverbs.
Ex. When you want to emphasize ‘today’, it can be written as: Heute läuft Brandon wegen
seiner Knie sehr langsam in den Park.
When the question is- Wie läuft Brandon heute seiner Knie in den Parl? Answer is by
emphasizing ‘how’, which will be written as: Sehr langsam läuft Brandon heute wegen seiner Knie in
den Park. [adv. (Mo) + V + S + (TeKaLo)
Adjectives
Predicative Adjective/ Predicativ Adjectiv- Adjectives that can stand alone. Eh. The
woman is beautiful.
A. Positive Degree.
- Unmodified adjective.
- Comparative of equality.
- ALWAYS NOMINATIVE.
1. So + positive adj. + wie (so….like) Ex. Er ist so dünn wie Tomas. > He is skinny like
Tomas.
2. Gleich + p.adj. + wie. Ex Er ist gleich ungelenk wie Tomas.
3. genauso +p.adj. +wie. Sie ist genauso gut wie er.
4. ebenso + p.adj. +wie. Ex. Sie sind ebenso laut wie ich.

B. Comparative of inferiority

C. Comparative Degee
- +er to the adjective. (never us mehr).
- Most monosyllabic adjectives with the vowels will have an umlaut. Ex. arm – ärmer; alt – älter;
jung – jünger.
- No umlaut for the ff: dunkel – dunkler; teuer – teurer; bunt- bunter; flach – flacher.
- For irregular adjectives, follow irregular patterns. Ex. gut – besser, viel- mehr; gen- Lieber;
bald- eher.
D. Superlative Degree.
1. am + Adj. + sten. Ex. laut – am lautesten; krank – am kränksten.
2. Add ‘e’ to adjectives ending in d,t,s,ß, sch, x, and z. Ex. suß – sußesten.
3. Exception: dringend (urgent) - am dringendsten; neidisch (jealous) – am neidischsten.
Attributiv adjective.
- Stands before a noun. Adjective + Noun. Don’t put an ending if there is no Noun after the
adjective.

- Must agree in gender, number, and case of the noun.
Ex. I carry a small (adjective) pants (noun). > Ich trage eine kleine [Note ‘e’ because it has a
weak ending] Hose.

- The article indicates the gender of the noun.
Ex. the beautiful woman is very tall. Die schöne [it is in the adjective wherein you will put the

zu [zu is a fixed preposition] dem kleinen Junge.

1. Check the article being used whether der/die/das, ein/eine, possessive, or kein.
2. Check the gender and the case of the noun.

- The music is so loud. > more intensified as compared to ‘very’ > use zu. > Die Musik is tzu
laut.
- The music is very loud. > use sehr. > Die Musik ist sehr laut.
Präteritum
- Simple past tense.
- Indicates past events/ actions that has been done.
- Conjugation rules is similar like present tense conjugation. Except for the endings and some
regular verbs from present tense may become irregular in the präteritum.

Irregular verb
o Almost all ‘ei’ verbs becomes ‘ie’. Ex. beschreiben > beschreib
o Usually, those with ‘s’ endings will have an ‘e’ added after the ‘s’. Ex. essen > ass >

o Sentence pattern: S + V + D + A (the sentence patten is the same with the present tense)
Examples:
I gave the shirt to my man. > Ich gab meinem Mann das Hemd.
I woke up last night. > Ich wachte letzte Nacht auf. (most phrases such as:
every day, every month, etc. are akkusativ.)
[ I learned German language today. > Ich lernte deutsche Schprache
heute.]
I cleaned my room. > Ich räumte mein Zimmern auf.
She brought along her brother. > Sie brachte ihren Bruder mit.
They danced together in the street. > Sie tanzten gemeinsam auf der
Straße. [auf der Straße- fixed phrase which means ‘in the street’]
The day before yesterday, she went to the party. > vongestern [no comma
here because it is an adverb] ging sie zu der Partei. [adverb+ V + S + O]

How to form the Partizip II:
1. Weak verbs. Regular and follow a rule.
a. Take the stem
b. Add ‘ge’ in front of the stem
c. Add ‘t’ after the stem
Ex. machen > gemacht
Fragen > gefragt
Arbeiten > gearbeitet
With separable verbs which consists of prefixes, we follow the same rule, put the ‘ge’ in
front of the stem.
Ex. einkaufen > eingehauft
vorstellen > vorgestellt
zuhören > zugehört
Exception 1: weak verbs with ‘ieren’ don’t get the prefix ‘ge’ but only the suffix ‘t’
Ex. sudieren > studiert
fotografieren > fotografiert
diskutieren > diskutiert
respektieren > respektiert
manifestieren > manifestiert
Exception 2: inseparable weak verbs don’t get the prefix ‘ge’ but only the suffix ‘t’
Ex. buschen > besucht
zerstören (to destroy)> zerstört
erholen > erholt
2. Strong verbs
To form Partizip II
a. Take the stem
b. Add ‘ge’ in front of the stem
c. Add ‘en’ after the stem
d. Change the stem vowel or the whole stem for some strong verbs
Ex. verbs with stem vowel change:
schreiben > geschrieben
singen > gesungen
fliegen > geflogen
Verbs with change of the whole stem
sein > gewesen
gehen > gegangen
essen > gegessen
3. Mixed verbs
Behave like strong and weak verbs. They have the prefix ‘ge’ and the suffix ‘t’ like weak
verbs but also change the stem vowel like strong verbs. There are only 6.

Ex. denken (to think) > gedacht
kennen (to know) > gekannt
bringen > gebracht
Word order: put the Hilfsverb after the subject; put the Partizip II at the end of the
sentence:
Ex. Ich habe sie gesehen. (I have seen her)
Ich bin in Cagayan gewewsen. > I have been in Cagayan
Er hat ihr das Buch gebracht > He has brought her the book
In questions: put the HV at the beginning of the sentence; put P2 at the end of the
sentence.
a. If ja oder neun question: V (sein or haben conjugated) + S + O + P2
b. W-frage: Wfrage + HV + S + O + adv. + P2

Adverbial Conjunctions
- Brings together 2 complete thoughts like a conjunction. The second clause modifies the first
clause like an adverb.
