Respiratory Functions
Functions of the respiratory system
 deliver oxygen to the cells of the body
 remove carbon dioxide, a cell waste product
How does gas exchange happen?
 During inhalation, air (oxygen) enters the body through the nose.
 As air passes through the nasal cavity (located inside the nose),
the air is warmed to body temperature and humidified.
 From the nasal cavity, air passes through
the pharynx (throat) and the larynx
(voice box).
 The air will now move to the trachea also
known as the wind pipe. It is the main
passageway of air to the lungs.

 The trachea branches into left and right bronchi each leading to a lung.

There are primary, secondary and tertiary bronchi as the tubes become

smaller inside the lungs. (singular bronchus)

 The tertiary bronchi give rise to bronchioles.

 At the tip of the bronchioles are the alveoli. (singular alveolus)

 Gas exchange occurs only in alveoli. Alveoli are the tiny air sacs. Alveoli are

in direct contact with capillaries of the circulatory system. Such intimate

contact ensures that oxygen will diffuse from alveoli into the blood and be

distributed to the cells of the body.

Note: The arrangement of capillaries and alveoli emphasizes the structural

and functional relationship of the respiratory and circulatory systems.

 The carbon dioxide that was produced by cells as a waste product will

diffuse from the blood into alveoli to be exhaled.

 Diaphragm is the muscle below the lungs that contracts when we inhale and

relaxes when we exhale.

Think about this…

Answer the following questions.
1. How will you describe the pathway of oxygen in our body?
2. What takes place when you inhale and exhale?
3. What will happen if one part of the system fails to carry out its
function properly?

FACE MASK DESIGN
Part I. Face Mask-Making

General Instruction: In this activity, you will learn to make a face mask from used clothing available in your
house. Decide the materials to be used and the step by step procedure in making the face mask. Please
consider the design, usability and comfort of the mask that you will make. Make a template on a separate
sheet of paper.

Part II.
Direction: Compare your Home-made face mask to a disposable face mask by filling in the template below.
Face Mask Describe how you inhale and Describe the comfort of wearing
exhale using the face mask. (test the face mask like: sweat
it by jumping as fast as you can in absorbing capacity, heat
3 minutes) absorbing capacity, and the moist
release when wearing eye glasses.

2. Why is that wearing of face mask mandatory in this time of pandemic caused by Covid-19?
3. How will you relate this activity in your lesson on respiratory and circulatory exchange of gases?
