LESSON 1- THE IDEA OF THE ATOM

Lesson Objectives:
1. Describe the circumstances that led to the development of
the model of an atom.
2. Explain the atomic theory of John Dalton;
3. Describe the modern model of the atom.

I need to know that…..

The development of modern atomic theory revealed much
about the inner structure of atoms. It was learned that an
atom contains a very small nucleus composed of positively
charged protons and uncharged neutrons, surrounded by a
much larger volume of space containing negatively charged
electrons. The nucleus contains the majority of an atom’s mass
because protons and neutrons are much heavier than
electrons, whereas electrons occupy almost all of an atom’s
volume.

EXPERIMENT NO. 1: Finding Indirect Evidence in Solving a Problem

To have a firsthand experience of looking for indirect evidence in

finding an answer to a problem, you have to do the following
activity.
Objective:
To find indirect evidence for an object without actually seeing the
object.

Procedure:

1. Prepare the following materials: 2 glasses, water, soap, and flashlight.

2. Fill two glasses with water. They must be completely full.
3. Set aside one glass of water and leave it alone.
4. To the other glass of water, put a pea-size piece of soap. Stir
the water to dissolve the soap.
5. Turn of all the lights in the room. Make sure that the room is in
complete darkness.
6. Shine a flashlight beam horizontally on the side of the soapy water
just below the level of the surface of water.
7. Repeat the procedure this time with the glass of plain water.
8. Observe and record the effect of light beam on each glass of water.

Questions:
