NOW THE GLOVE IS ON THE OTHER FOOT

Dear hand in glove

It’s been 25 years since White Gloves first challenged you to go totally old school,
and 125 years since the invention of Eastman Kodak film stock, so we thought it
would be fun to celebrate the silver anniversary of one of the world’s most unusual
film events.

Rather than just some drinks, nibbles and screenings of old entries, we’re inviting
some of our favourite glovers to take part in a rebooted White Gloves for the 21st
century.

For this micro-event, all films must once again be shot over the same 48 hour period,
feature the much loved secret symbol and run no longer than two and half minutes.

However there are a few changes.

• As you may have noticed, all this whizzy new digital-tubing has totally changed
the moving picture landscape and sadly super 8 and 16mm film stock and the
equipment used to bring it to life is history in more ways than one.

So for White Gloves v2.0, you can shoot on any digital platform from a
smartphone to a Sony RED and submit your entry online.

This means we can’t stop you from editing your footage but bear in mind you only
have 48 hours for both the shoot and postproduction and if you want to keep with
tradition, you can always shoot in a single take or edit in camera as an extra
challenge –always impressive if you pull it off. Of course this time around there
won’t be any surprises for you come screening time, unless that’s what you’re
aiming for.

• No CGI - Special effects should be done the old fashioned way, with sparklers, a
can of pureed corn, fishing line and an embarrassed dog wearing a papier-mâché
unicorn horn.

• It’s free! - Bytes and pixels cost nothing and there’s no film costs or bloody
cumbersome logistics to deal with anymore.

But in keeping with the original spirit, all entries will be screened in black and white
and without sound. If your entry is already formatted like that, great! If not, on the
screening night the data projector ‘s colour settings will be black and white and it
won’t be plugged into the sound system, so if your mini masterwork relies on colour
or sound, it could be tricky.

Just for a change, the shooting weekend will be 16-17 August 2014 and the
screening on 2 September 2014, which is exactly 25 years to the day after the first
shoot weekend in 1989. The screening venue is yet to be confirmed but will be
somewhere nice with some drinkies and surprises.

If this 25th anniversary celebration tickles your filmbone, please RSVP to:
whiteglovesrebooted@gmail.com and we’ll send you more details about how it will all
work.

It’ll be fun, possibly educational and we’d love to see the old gang again, digitally and
in the flesh.
