METHOD STATEMENT FOR INSTALLATION OF AUTOMATIC FOAM SYSTEM

1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this method statement is to identify the requirement for installation of
Automatic Foam System as per the contract specification, drawings and as per the DC &
NFPA regulations for “CONSTRUCTION OF MINI ZAYED FISHER’S MAN WHARF
FISH MARKET, ABU DHABI, UAE “

2.0 SCOPE
This method statement is applicable to all activities related to installation of Automatic Foam system
for “CONSTRUCTION OF MINI ZAYED FISHER’S MAN WHARF FISH MARKET, ABU
DHABI, UAE “All works shall be conducted in conformance with relevant project drawings/
specifications, authorities concerned, Manufacturer Recommendations and good industry practices.

4.0 TOOLS& EQUIPMENT / MATERIAL

4.1 Mechanical hoist, fork lifts, drilling machine and hole saw machine/welding machines,
threading machine/cutting machine, tool box with complete set, pipe stand for pipe support,
grooving machine, portable pump & hydro testing pump (manual), cutting, grinding and
welding machine, scaffoldings and ladders, center punch, hammer, split level, hacksaw frame
and blade, spanners and pipe wrench, chain block, etc.
4.2 Foam Bladder tank, 3% conc. AFFF foam, Deluge Valve,GI pipes and Fittings, Nozzles,
Sprinklers, Isolation Valves, Strainer, NRVs and etc.

5.0 RESPONSIBILITY
5.1 Project Manager shall be responsible for overall project execution, he will coordinate with
client and head office, progress monitoring, attending review meeting, resource management,
overall he will be responsible for timely completion of project in accordance to all contractual
requirements.

5.2 Project Engineer shall be responsible for co-ordination and monitoring construction activities
and construction groups and ensure that work is done as per specification and approved
drawings and all safety measures are implemented. Allocation of manpower and machineries in
consultation with construction manager
 Achieving target progress, backlog if any, he will consult with construction manager for its
recovery action plan.
 Monitoring whether work is going on as per approved method
statement/drawing/specification etc.
 Monitoring lines, levels as per approved drawings.
 Monitoring timely materials supply at construction location.
 Raising RFI and other necessary inspection and test records and forward to QA/QC
Engineer for further process.

5.3 Site Engineer:

 Preparing daily progress repot / site report
 Engagement of manpower and machineries in work as required.
 Verifying line, level etc.
 Supervising every individual activity.
 Initiating for RFI and other necessary inspecting records.

5.4 Foreman shall be responsible for checking & setting out alignments, levels and installation etc.

5.5 Safety Officer shall be responsible for monitoring and implementation of HSE requirements,
daily checking of work permit, supervising whether each worker are using necessary PPE.
Supervising whether each worker is working in safe manner following applicable safety rules
and regulations.

5.6 QA/QC Engineer:

 Monitoring whether the activities are in accordance to approved method statement / IFC
drawing /specification.
 Raising and closing internal NCR if any.
 Documentation in accordance to approved PQP / ITP.

6.0 PROCEDURE / METHOD TO BE EMPLOYED

 Ensure all drawings are approved.

 Ensure entire system according to drawings and specifications.
 Ensure all preceding installation/activities are completed, inspected and approved.
 Check all final fixes are properly installed.

6.1.2 Testing and Commissioning of Deluge system.

Testing of deluge system is done initially with foam valve isolated. This is to prevent damage
to the protected area by the discharge of foam.

 Outlet valve of foam concentrate tank is closed for this test.

 Testing of deluge system involves the activation of deluge valve by manual release valve.
 Ensure that both pressure gauges in the trim of the deluge valve show steady reading.
 Open the manual release valve.
 Observe for the operation of the deluge valve and audible alarm from the fire alarm system.
 Record the test results on the attached sheets.

. 6.1.3 Testing and Commissioning of Foam system.

 Remove the open nozzles in the foam deluge system and plug the outlets to prevent the
discharge of foam.
 Keep one nozzle at the remote end of the deluge system for conducting the test. Remove the
nozzle and extend the pipe to a safe area where the foam can be discharged.
 A barrel (drum) is to be kept at the end this pipe to collect the foam without spilling into the
floor.
 Reset the deluge valve and keep the system in operational readiness actuating valve to the
foam tank.
 Open the outlet valve of the foam concentrate tank and also pressure actuating valve to the
foam tank.
 Activate the deluge valve by manual release valve.
 Observe for the operation of deluge valve and audible alarm from fire alarm system.
 Allow the foam water solution to flow through the test line only for 15-20 seconds as the
barrel may overflow and spill the contents into the floor.
 Record the test results on the form.
 After conducting testing in a satisfactory manner reset the deluge valve and keep the system
in operational readiness by keeping the isolation valves in open position.
 Fix the nozzle of the deluge system back and put the system back to normal condition.

8 SAFETY REQUIREMENT
8.1 Appropriate work permit to be obtained prior to start of work.
8.2 Toolbox talks to be conducted prior to commencement of works.
8.3 All necessary barriers, signage lighting etc. to be provided and maintained.
8.4 Appropriate PPE to be worn / used.
8.5 Close supervision on safety requirement shall be provided.
8.6 Adequate signage to be provided during the work.
