BTEC Level 2: Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication

Homework

1. How do emotions become a barrier in communication? Give one example to illustrate your
answer.

Emotional barriers to communication are usually due to a lack of emotional

awareness or control, often referred to as emotional intelligence. For the example,
Anger is detrimental to communication in many ways. First, it makes you less
logical. Anger actually affects the way your brain processes information. You’re
less likely to solve problems effectively, and you’re more likely to reject
explanations and solutions from others, even when they’re right. Beside that, anger
tends to cause a strong reaction from those around us. Whether the person you’re
directing your anger at ends up feeling hurt, scared, or defensive, chances are the
conversation isn’t going to end up going as productively as it could have.

2. Give three examples of how to use different intonation for the same sentence.

Highlight the word being stressed.

Sentence Meaning
I buy this pencil Me, not someone else
I buy this pencil Buy, not sell
I buy this pencil Pencil, not notebooks

3. Name three medium of communication that you use the most and explain why you use
them the most.

First, I use verbal communication is the use of language to transfer information

through speaking or sign language. It is one of the most common types, often used
during presentations, video conferences and phone calls, meetings and one-on-one
conversations. Verbal communication is important because it is efficient. Second, I
use nonverbal communication is the use of body language, gestures and facial
expressions to convey information to others. It can be used both intentionally and
unintentionally. For example, people might smile unintentionally when they hear a
pleasing or enjoyable idea or piece of information. Nonverbal communication is
helpful when trying to understand others’ thoughts and feelings. Third, I use visual.
Visual communication is the act of using photographs, art, drawings, sketches,
charts and graphs to convey information. Visuals are often used as an aid during
presentations to provide helpful context alongside written and/or verbal
communication. Because people have different learning styles, visual
communication might be more helpful for some to consume ideas and information.
