How to write a paragraph


What is a paragraph?

It is a set of sentences related to the same topic. These sentences must be:

 Unified (your sentences should be written in one block)


 Clearly related to the thesis. ( one and only one topic )
 Coherent (we don’t jump from for example the effect of smoking in the first sentence to the
teaching techniques in the second sentence!)
 Well developed: ( you need to support your topic through evidences)

There are a list of connectors that you have to use in order to link between your sentences ;

I.
Instead of using the ‘and’ between each sentence; put a full stop at the end of each idea then
start the second sentence with one of these connectors:
1. Adding ideas connectors:

As well as, too, also, furthermore, in addition, besides, moreover, then

2. Emphasizing ideas ( to put the stress on an idea)

As a matter of, in fact, indeed

3. Reformulating ideas:
That is to say, in other words, namely, to put things differently
4. Summing up ideas:

In short, all things considered, to sum up, to summarize

II. In order to avoid repetition in your paragraph use the logical connectors according to what
your sentence is expressing:
1. Cause :
Because, because of , in so far as, since, the reason why
2. Consequence:
As a result, therefore, as a consequence, consequently, eventually, so, thus; that’s why.
3. Contrast and Concession: ( it is an idea which is strikingly different than another or
opposites)

Although, though, even though, but, despite, in spite of, nevertheless, however.

4. Condition:

If, unless(means if not) , provides that, otherwise.

Exercice :/ Choose the adequate connector to relate between these sentences from the list;
Although, otherwise, also, because,if, therefore, so that, since, unless, besides, by consequence.
-I worked all weekend ……………………………I was late in my states.

In other to do this exercise you have first to examine what expresses each sentence then you have to
look for the adequate connector
