Loyola: Hallmark of Excellence
Loyola, having educated thousands of students ever since its inception, has brought
many laurels and accolades for its academic excellence.
Loyola College begins her existence in July, 1925 with 75 students of
undergraduate courses in Mathematics, History and Economics.

11 Institutes of Excellence offer various programmes.

The status of autonomy was granted in 1978. The college is affiliated to

University of Madras.

NAAC accreditation score in 2012 (Third Cycle) is 3.70 out of 4.00 CGPA.

Loyola College is ranked 6th among Arts and Science Colleges in India by
National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resource
and Development (MHRD), Government of India, in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The college was recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research

Organization (SIRO) by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research
(DSIR), Government of India in 2010 and the status was extended for 9 years.

UGC elevated Loyola College from the status of “College with Potential for
Excellence” to “College of Excellence” in 2014 for a period of 5 years.

11 departments offer M.Phil. and 12 departments conduct Ph.D. research. At

present, 184 teaching staff members hold doctoral degree.

Loyola has a strong research culture. It aims at promoting multidisciplinary research and education in Arts and
Humanities, Sciences and Commerce.
• About 455 Ph.D. research scholars carry out research under 81 research supervisors.
• Loyola is the only Arts and Science College which figured in Current Science magazine for research
contributions to national development.
• Loyola Research Park has been established to promote the research culture among UG and PG students.
• Loyola College has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by Department
of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India.
• The Central Board of Direct Taxes, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India has recognized
the quality scientific research done in Loyola College by the approval accorded to it on 01.04.2011 of tax
exemption under clause (ii) sub section 1 of section 35 of the Income Tax Act 1961. This approval enables
175% weighted deduction from the Gross Total Income to the donors of Loyola College Society for the
purpose of scientific research.

RESEARCH INSTITUTES
Research contributes necessary content to teaching and learning. Any quality teaching draws on quality research.
Hence Loyola College encourages its faculty to engage themselves in sound research, by providing infrastructure
and other support services. Students are also encouraged to choose research projects for their PG, M.Phil. and
Ph.D. Research Programmes from various research institutes within Loyola campus.

Entomology Research Institute (ERI)
Entomology Research Institute is one of the Centres of
Excellence in Loyola College, Chennai. It was started in
1963 by Prof. T.N. Ananthakrishnan. It is recognized by
University of Madras to conduct doctoral programme.
It has 6 full time Faculty, 3 Emeritus Scientists and 25
Research Students. ERI aims at creating a better society
through research, publications and extension activities.

Loyola Institute of Social Science
Training and Research (LISSTAR)
LISSTAR is another Social Science Research unit of
Loyola College. It was established in 2007 by the
Jesuit Management to focus on research, training and
publication. LISSTAR publishes an Inter-disciplinary
National Journal called Social Glance. It aims at
disseminating new knowledge in the sphere of Social
Sciences and Humanities. LISSTAR also undertakes
collaborative research and programmes with advanced
research centres such as Centre for Development
Studies (CDS) Trivandrum, RGNIYD, UNHCR and
with other research institutions.

Loyola Institute of Frontier Energy (LIFE)
LIFE is an inter-disciplinary and collaborative research
institute in Loyola College started by Rev. Dr. Francis
Xavier, SJ, in 1995. The thrust areas are: Energy,
Environment, Bioethics, Awareness Education to
students and the masses. Today, 11 voluntary Faculty
from the departments of Chemistry, Physics, and
Life Sciences are engaged in active research with 36
Research Scholars pursuing Ph.D., and a number of
M.Phil., and M.Sc., project students. It is recognized
as one of the Centres of Excellence in Loyola and also
one of the two research institutes of Loyola enjoying
the benefit of 175% tax-exemption.

Human Excellence
The School of Human Excellence (SHE) is a special
academic unit of Loyola College committed to offer
Holistic Formation to every loyolite. As formation is
central to Jesuit academic mission, the Jesuit Higher
Education commission has adopted this model as an
academic discipline in Loyola College. This formation
process is oriented by a team of formators (Professors
with proven experience in life skills training) who
play a crucial role in guiding students in their value-
centered pursuit towards becoming men and women
for and with others in the society. The faculty members
prepare modules, design materials and engage students
to reflect, self-question, interact and exchange ideas
about values and ethics in the biorhythms of human
society. Entwined with regular class sessions, the

Outreach
Outreach programme aims at forming men and
women for others for a better society. Outreach is the
third dimension of higher education in Loyola College
and endeavours training the college students for their
attitudinal change. It is a novel step in the Jesuit higher
education for promoting a value-based fraternity,
equality, justice and a just society. Every student is
made to understand the society critically and develop
critical consciousness which motivates them to serve

Resource Centre for Differently Abled (RCDA)
Resource Centre for the Differently Abled (RCDA) was
established on January 16, 2006. It was set up as the
Model Resource Centre of Disability Services (MRCDS),
the first of its kind in the nation to cater to the needs
of the differently abled. It aims at empowering such
students in their studies and co-curricular activities.
MRCDS is equipped with many specialized devices to
enable the visually challenged to grow intellectually
and it also has special devices to help other categories
of differently abled students in the campus. At present,
110 visually challenged students of the college are
making use of the centre.

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell in
Loyola College was established on 3rd
November 2003. The prime task of the
IQAC is to develop a system for conscious,
consistent and catalytic improvement in
the overall performance of the college. For
this, during the post-accreditation period,
it channelizes all efforts and measures
of the Institution towards academic
excellence. IQAC evolves mechanisms and
procedures for ensuring timely, efficient
and progressive performance of academic,
research, administrative and financial

through continuous intervention of conducting orientations, developing leadership skill among

Loyola Learning Management
System (LLMS) is a virtual learning
platform for learning beyond the
classroom. LLMS is tailored to the

faculty with the myriad choices

learning and evaluation. Loyola
LMS is a user-friendly interface for
educators and administrators to develop and assign course content, track student progress, and

ADMISSION IN LOYOLA
Admission into Loyola is competitive. The selection
policies and admission process are unique. We
welcome applicants from diverse social, cultural,
economic, ethnic and geographical backgrounds.
As per the Jesuit Chennai Province preferential
option, Dalit Catholics, Catholics, Tribals, and other
marginalized in the society would be given priority.
Eligibility Factors
Loyola gives preference to the students from the
neighbouring districts. The inclusive tradition of
loyola welcomes students from other states and
countries.
Women students can apply for all the Postgraduate
courses and also for B.Sc. VISCOM, B.M.M.
(Animation), French Lit., B.Voc. Digital Journalism,
3D Animation and B.B.A France in Undergraduate
courses.
Students who have completed the Tamil Nadu
Higher Secondary Course or any other course,
recognized by University of Madras as equivalent

Important Notice:
1. Once admitted there will not be any consideration for changes in either Shift or Subject.
2. The student’s regular attendance is essential for promotion to successive semesters of
study.
3. Students with lack of required attendance will be taken off the rolls.
4. Following admission if the student decides to move out of Loyola, he/she does so before
the actual day communicated on our college website. Withdrawals afterwards do not
qualify refund.
5. No donation. Loyola College does not accept donations in any form for admission.
Beware of anyone who promises you to get an admission on payment of money. Kindly
bring such malpractices to the notice of Principal / Admissions Officer immediately.

At the time of interview, the original documents of all
certificates uploaded along with the online application
should be produced for verification.
Information will be given only to those who are
provisionally selected. They have to present themselves
along with any one of the parents for interview with
the Principal on the date mentioned in the call letter.
Failure to be present on the scheduled date and time
will lead to cancellation of admission.
The information of selection will be sent to the
registered Mobile No. via SMS. It will also be posted
in the registered online portal and the college website
(www.loyolacollege.edu).
UG admission
Screening process for all shortlisted candidates
for UG courses (B.Sc. Viscom, B.M.M., B.Voc.,
B.Com. Accounting and Finance, B.Com. (Hons),
B.Com. Computer Applications and BBA France will
be conducted. The list of students eligible for the
screening process will be published in the online
portal and thereafter admission will take place.

An Entrance Test for all candidates applying for PG
courses will be conducted. Date and mode for entrance
test and personal interview will be announced in the
college website.
The last date for submitting the online application for
all PG courses will be announced online.
Fee Payment
The provisionally selected and admitted candidates
have to pay the prescribed fee through Credit Card,
Debit Card, Net Banking or By Cash at any branch of
Axis Bank (through EASY PAY) as per your convenience.
Withdrawal
The enrolled students are expected to complete their
course of study. They may not withdraw from the
college without informing the Principal in writing.
Otherwise, they will be liable to pay the fee of the
period for which their names remain on the roll. The
students who are provisionally admitted cannot claim
for a refund of fee if they decide to discontinue the
course (subject to conditions).

Note to the Applicants
The college expects the students to be highly focussed in academics and make maximum use of the facilities available for holistic
development. No student is allowed to take tuitions privately from the teachers of this college. Examinations will be conducted
periodically for all students. Attendance is compulsory and promotion will depend on their regularity. During the course of the
study, students are encouraged to take any additional diploma / certificate course offered by various institutes in the campus,
relevant of their subject specialization. Students from vernacular medium will have Special English coaching classes during the
first year at free of cost.

DISCIPLINARY NORMS
Loyola is dedicated not only to learning and advancement of knowledge but also to developing ethical and responsible
human beings. The policies related to discipline are made with this uncompromising perspective. Ragging of any kind and
any magnitude inside / outside the college campus will lead to dismissal. All students who come to college by two wheelers
should wear helmet. Any kind of disturbing behaviour and causing damage to college / public property in the campus are
strictly forbidden. Smoking, use of drugs, alcohol or peddling drugs in the campus is prohibited. Any ill-treatment, both
physical and verbal, based on gender, caste and religion will lead to dismissal.
