Experiment no-6
Experiment name :Estimation of scouring effect on scoured fabrics.

Theory
Scouring is a procedure through which natural impurities (oil, wax, gum, fat, etc) and added
impurities are eliminated fully during the manufacturing process.Especially hydrophobic
character which is present in the fiber of fabric is removed by this process. The fabric is more
hydrophilic after the process .Thus better dye uptake is observed on the fabrics. There are
several methods to test optimum scouring effect on treated fabric. Immersion test, drop test spot
test and column test. By these tests the sourcing effect is determined. It is needed to ensure good
scouring of the fabric

Objective
To learn about the estimation process of scouring effect.
To learn about standard ranges the test methods in case of optimum scouring.
Apparatus
1. Beaker.
2. Measuring
3. Cylinder.
4. Pipette.
5. Pot.
6. Digital Balance.
7. Scissor.
Chemicals
1. Direct dye 0.1%
Sample
Scoured cotton Fabric

Working Procedure
Immersion test:
● Sample size is“1 cm x 1 cm”
● If the fabric floats on the water, then it may be said that the fabric is unscoured
● If the fabric is immersed within 5 seconds then it may be said that the fabric is scoured
well
Drop test :
Solution 0.1% Direct red
A drop is allowed to fall on the fabric by a pipette from 1 or 2 inch above fabric and time in
second is measured until the dye drop is fully absorbed.
If dye drop is absorbed within 1 second, then the scouring is of standard level
If dye drop is absorbed within 0.5 – 0.8 second, then the scouring is of good level.

Spot Test:
Solution of 0.1% direct red
Pour uniform drop on fabric Size of droplet is observed.
If the drop is a uniform shaped circle then the scouring is good . But if the shape is not uniform
then the scouring is poor

Column test
sample size into 18cm X 5cm. 0.1% direct dye solution was taken into a beaker. Then to
immersed 1 cm (from the length side) of the scoured fabric into the solution with the help of
stand & hold it for 5 minute. After 5 minute we have to observe the absorbed colored area.

If the absorption rise up as high as 30 mm then it may be said that the fabric has good scouring
If the absorption rise up as high as 50 mm then it may be said that the fabric has excellent
scouring.

Conclusion
Through this experiment we have learned ways to determine a standard scoured fabric. It will
help us to identify and determine the level of scouring of the fabrics.
