OBJECTIVES

OBJECTIVES OF THE SESSION TOPIC

At the end of our session, You must be able to:
1. Recognize the different types of geometrical translations/
transformations.
2. Distinguish among the different types of geometrical
translations/transformations.
3. Apply geometrical translations/transformations in
real life situations esp. using strategies in teaching
mathematics.

GEOMETRICAL
TRANSFORMATIONS
TRANSFORMATIONS
In geometry, it is the
process of moving, flipping,
turning, enlarging or
reducing geometrical
figures to create new
figures. These
corresponding figures are
frequently designed into
artistic work (e.g.
wallpaper, graphical
borders,mosaics, and etc.)
WHAT DOES
GEOMETRICAL
TRANSFORMATIONS
MAKES IMPORTANT?
Transformations can be
seen in artwork,
architecture, engineering,
interior design, nature,
amusement parks, etc.

These geometrical
procedures and
characteristics make
objects more visually
pleasing
FEATURES OF
GEOMETRICAL
TRANSFORMATIONS
Transformation features the
following:
-isometry
-symmetry
-position
-similarity
-ratio and proportion
-pattern repetition
A transformation maps an
initial figure into a final
figure.

The initial figure (blue)

known as pre-image and
the final figure (green)
known as image

The red lines show some

corresponding points

WHAT ARE TYPES OF
GEOMETRICAL
TRANSFORMATIONS?
Types of Geometrical Transformation

Translation
Reflection
Rotation
Dilation
Tessellation
TRANSLATIONS
How are translations
used in a
marching band show?
A Translation is a
transformation that
moves all points of a
figure the same
distance in the same
direction.
ILLUSTRATIVE
EXAMPLES
REFLECTIONS
Where are reflections
found in nature?
A Reflection is a
transformation
representing a flip of a
figure. Figures may be
reflected in a point, a
line, or a plane.
ILLUSTRATIVE
EXAMPLES
ROTATION
How do some
amusement rides
illustrate rotations?
A Rotation is a
transformation that
turns every point of a
preimage through a
specified angle and
direction about a fixed
point.
The fixed point is
called the center of
rotation.
ILLUSTRATIVE
EXAMPLES
DILATION
How do you use
dilations when you
use a computer?
A Dilation is a
transformation that
changes the size of a
figure. A dilation
requires a center point
and a scale factor.
ILLUSTRATIVE
EXAMPLES
TESSELLATION
How are
tessellations used
in art?
A tessellation is a
pattern that covers a
plane by transforming
the same figure or set
of figures so that there
are no overlapping or
empty spaces.
