Timeline of the Development of Electromagnetic Wave Theory
Definition: Electromagnetic waves or EM waves are waves that are created as a result of
vibrations between an electric field and a magnetic field.
Description: Electromagnetic waves are formed when an electric field comes in contact with
a magnetic field. They are hence known as ‘electromagnetic’ waves. The electric field and
magnetic field of an electromagnetic wave are perpendicular (at right angles) to each other.
They are also perpendicular to the direction of the EM wave.
Characteristics:
They can travel in a vacuum (i.e. they do not require a medium.
They can travel at the speed of light in a vacuum (c = 3.00 x 108m/s)
Gamma rays
X rays
UV waves
Visible light
Infrared waves
Microwaves
Radio waves

Competency: Compare the relative wavelengths of different forms of electromagnetic waves.
______________________: electromagnetic radiation refers to the waves of the
electromagnetic field, propagating through space, carrying electromagnetic radiant
energy.
ACTIVITY NO.3
A. Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct word to complete the sentence.
B. Directions: Read the passage from the text and answer the questions that
follow.
Electromagnetic waves are waves which can travel through the vacuum of outer
space. They are created by the vibration of an electric charge. This vibration creates
a wave which has both an electric and a magnetic component. When an electron
returns to a lower energy level, it is thought to give off tiny “packet” of energy called
photon. The amount of energy in a photon may vary. It depends on the frequency of

electromagnetic radiation. The higher the frequency is, the more energy a photon
has.
Electromagnetic waves vary in wavelength and frequency. Longer wavelength
electromagnetic waves have lower frequencies, and shorter wavelength waves have
higher frequencies. Higher frequency waves have more energy. The speed of a
wave is a product of its wavelength and frequency.
