Almost every leader ’s problem list includes a lazy, unreliable subordinate. Paul is typical, a

talented and capable, but just does not seem to care about the job. Although there is no evidence of

unmanageable personal problems, he simply not making much effort at work. John arrives late,

leaves early, takes long break and does as little as possible while on the job.

John’s performance is a drag on the group, and other people in the group are beginning to

think they can get away with the same behaviors.

Most leader’s respond to this situation by asking what is wrong with John. The answer is

nothing.

Now look for the three elements of the motivation process to see what clues they offer. After

analyzing the reason’s and cause’s, do you agree that this is not a problem for John but clearly for

the leader? Explain your answer and think of some possible solutions.
