Meaning of the quoted lines
The readers know the truth that Oedipus
does not. He really was sicker than the
people of Thebes given what he did to the
past in the murder and how he bed his own
mother.
Oedipus was very anxious to capture the
murderer of Laius since he was thinking that
the murderer might even kill him soon. When
in truth, Oedipus was the murderer he was
seeking.
Oedipus claims for it to be strange that a
highwayman dared to murder King Laius. But
the truth is he himself, murdered King Laius.
