Department of Information and Communication Technology Form: 6B Subject: Computer Science (Unit 1)
RATIONALE:
The widespread application of Computer Science, as embodied in the tools and techniques for gathering, manipulating,
analyzing and disseminating information, made possible because of dramatic improvements in computer and
telecommunications technologies, has significantly changed society. Moreover, the increased integration of computer and
telecommunications technology, exemplified by the Internet and its associated technologies, has led to an increased
globalization of the world economy.
In order for individuals to become an integral part of this new world and to take advantage of the economic opportunities
it offers students need to be able to use existing computer-based systems and to create and maintain them; which will
require a solid foundation in Computer Science. The course is intended primarily for students who want to pursue a
professional career in Computer Science or related disciplines and provides the opportunity for the acquisition of
relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes as preparation for further studies in Computer Science and the world of work.
