Unit 1: History and Careers

This activity will help you meet these educational goals:

Introduction
Graphic designers have different responsibilities based on their career choice. You have to
understand the career opportunities available to you as a graphic designer. You also have to
master the basic hardware and software that you would use in your work.

Task 1: Graphic Designer Responsibilities

Research online and describe how the responsibilities and skills vary for a graphic designer
working in the following fields.

6) Fashion and clothing

You are joining a publishing company. How are self-representation skills important in our job?

Self representation skills such as proper dress and punctuality demonstrate to a company
that you will take your job seriously. It is important to meet deadlines and manage your time
accordingly.

Task 3: Diversity Awareness

Most people encounter someone at school or at work with whom they don’t really associate. Pick
someone in your school whom you may have classes with but don’t really know. Write down
what you think you know about the person. Then, speak with that person and write a
response about what you have learned. Write an additional paragraph at the end, discussing
how taking the time to get to know someone can make a difference.

Task 4: Interview a Graphic Designer

Interview a graphic designer over the telephone. In the interview you need to ask questions to
find the reason for the designer’s choice of the profession, job responsibilities, and skills
required to perform the job. Write down the questions and the responses for each.

Task 5: Identify Hardware and Install a Printer and Scanner

Perform the following activities.

A) Identify and describe your computer or laptop’s hardware, software, and operating
system.
B) Describe the installation process for printers and scanners. Identify possible
malfunctions relating to this installation process.
C) Research and describe how you would ensure computer and Internet safety. Describe
how you would use ergonomics to minimize the detrimental effects of excess computer
usage on your body.

A) I built my computer so I know all of my specs. My CPU is a Ryzen 3 3200g, my

motherboard is a ASUS ROG B550-F, my graphics card is a ASUS ROG OC 1070,
16gb 3200mhz memory ,a 240gb ADATA SSD, and a 600w Thermaltake PSU. My
operating system is Windows 10 Pro.
B) Installing a printer is very easy, make sure you have all your cords, plug them
into your computer as prompted and make sure when printing you pick the right
printer, size, and color(s)
C) ​Maintain good posture when working at the keyboard. Utilize a chair with back
support. Avoid twisting or bending your trunk or neck. Frequently used items
should be positioned directly in front of you and angled upward on a copyholder
when working.
