Busbar

Busbars are manufactured from either electrical grade copper (C103, BS1432/1433) or Electrical Grade
Aluminium (EN AW 6101). The Powerbar will withstand the stress of RMS symmetrical fault current for a
one second duration as shown in the previous tables.

A 200% rated neutral shall be provided which is completely contained within the Powerbar
Optional:
enclosure
A 100% rated isolated earth (clean earth) shall be provided which is completely contained
Optional:
within the Powerbar enclosure.
A 100% rated earth bar shall be provided with the Powerbar enclosure (the Aluminium
Optional:
housing can serve as an integral earth conductor).

A busbar system is made up of interlocking components that give it great flexiblity in design. The use of
modular components allows each job to be specifically designed and accurately priced in an itemised
format. Busbar trunking can make use of a variety of angled components giving more flexibility than
traditional cable projects, as it requires smaller radii when turning thus being more suited to the space
contraints of building is made easy with the use of end boxes which can be used to connect a new
system into the existing busbar system.

Enclosure

The system has been designed and manufactured in accordance with the following standards:

● IEC 60439-1
● IEC 60439-2

The maximum operating temperature complies with IEC 60439-2 in any position at its rated current and
IP 54 level of protection.
The Product is supplied as factory assembled units, rigid in construction and symmetrical in appearance.
The construction of the trunking sections, prevents phase reversal of adjacent sections. The joints
between trunking lengths are formed by a removable stack joint and insulator plates are provided within
the joint to isolate each phase, neutral and earth.
The enclosure is made of extruded alluminum sections while all other fixtures and fittings are plated for
corrosive resistance. The sandwich style construction of the Powerbar gives it a compact but rigid
structure and increases voltage stability giving improved results for the voltage drop, which is important
for the operation of voltage sensitive equipment.
The Powerbar casing has no ventilation openings and has been tested and complies with IP 54 for
feeder, distribution and tap-off units.

Tapping Units

Tapping Units are:

● Circuit breaker (current limiting)

● Fuse - Switch Disconnector

Tapping units can be positioned on the trunking to meet the customer's requirements with an integral
shutter that will automatcially open upon installation. The flexibility of the system is increased by the
location of tap-off outlets every 500mm along the distribution trunking. Unlike traditional cable systems
the use of busbar means the layout of a system can be changed without the need for new distribution
lengths. The installation of additional outlets is therefore more cost effective lowering life cycle costs.
Description and ratings of tapping units are shown on the drawings. Fuse switch tapping units contain
three fuse carriers, rated to accept fuse links of many sizes and types, BS or DIN.
The tap-off units have an interlocking door and suitable rotary operating mechanism. The design of the
unit allows the the earth connection to engage before phase connections when installing the unit adding
to the overall safety of the system. All accessories required to attach the trunking are captive.
Another safety feature of the tapping units prevents removal from the trunking unit unless the switching
mechanism is in the "OFF" position. All tapping units have internationally recognised symbols indicating
the "ON/OFF" position.

Joints

Electrical joints are made using a single bolt arrangement decreasing installation time. This allows
contractors to achieve deadlines as well as cost saving. The Powerbar busbars are easily installed by
tightening the "one-bolt joint". The use of belleville spring washers on both ends of the bolt ensures the
original contact pressure is maintained giving a more secure and reliable joint. Inspection covers shall be
provided to permit periodic inspection of the bolts without de-energisation of the busbar thus eliminating
unwanted downtime.
The integral joint and busbar construction forms a combined structure sufficient rigid to be supported
both horizontally and vertically. The joint will allow for an adjustment of +/- 3mm in length to allow for
installation variation.

Fire Barriers

Fire barriers can be provided when the busbar penetrates fire rated walls or floors, which is
manufactured from approved fire retardant compound giving two-hour protection. This test has been
carried out in conjunction with ISO 834. The use of a fire barrier and the sandwich construction of the
Powerbar prevent flames from passing through a specified fire rated wall or door.
