LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET (LAS) No. 1

3rd Quarter, SY 2020-2021
ENGLISH 9 (Week 1)
Lesson: Bias and Prejudice

Name of Learner: ____________________________________ Date: _________________

Grade and Section: ___________________________________ Score: ______________

I. Introductory Concept:

At your age, you are already very familiar with the saying “No man is an island.” Aren’t you?

We have learned to live not only on our own but also with the presence and help of other people.
As we interact others, some circumstances are not always warm and accommodating. They are sometimes
accompanied by rejections and discriminations. Sensitivity towards other people’s feelings and situations is
a huge factor that will lead us to live in a world where equality reigns.

This LAS in English 9 will expose you to varied activities especially crafted to enhance your skills in
detecting biases and prejudices.

II. Learning Skills from the MELCs:

 Competency: Differentiate biases from prejudices (EN9LC-IVf-13.3) (Analyzing)

Objectives:

 Identify some images that show biases and prejudices (Remembering)

 Distinguish biases from prejudices through given examples/scenarios (Understanding)

III. Review/Discussion:

What comes to your mind when you see this logo?

It is a segment from a famous noontime television show, “Eat Bulaga”.

Was there a time in your life when you caught yourself prejudging others? Do you consider yourself

judgmental as well? Then, how will you judge these given dialogues?

Do you believe that the statements above show fairness and equality? If your answer is “NO”, then
it means you are good in detecting prejudices. But what made you say that the dialogues show prejudices?

Prejudice refers to a preconceived opinion or feeling toward a person based solely on their affiliation with
a group. This feeling may be translated into action by discriminating against the person or members of the
target group.

An individual may be prejudiced against others based on factors such as race, age, gender, sexual
orientation, class status, religion, nationality, and amongst other things.

Examples:
a) “I don’t want Blacks living in my neighborhood!”
b) “I don’t want Jews owning businesses in my town!”
c) “I don’t want a Muslim community center in lower Manhattan!”

These examples clearly show that there are prejudices going on. The statements prejudge against
black people, Jews, and Muslims basically because of their race, nationality and religion. Even though they
have not done anything wrong yet, but because of their backgrounds, people tend to prejudge them and
eventually discriminate them. These are very common in our society even up to the present time.

Another term that causes confusion and is often used interchangeably with “prejudice” is “bias”. But
these two terms differ from each other. Let’s examine how it differs from the former.

Bias is a tendency to lean in a certain direction, either in favor of or against a particular thing. To be truly
biased means to lack a neutral viewpoint on a particular topic. Somewhere along the line, bias took on a
negative connotation.

If you're biased toward something, then you lean favorably toward it; you tend to think positively
of it. Meanwhile, if you're biased against something, then you lean negatively against it; you tend to think
poorly of it.

Examples:
a) In other Christian sects, the preacher position is only given to males and not to females.
b) Sectarian schools only accept students who share the same religious beliefs.
c) Some churches don’t accept women who wear pants instead of dresses or skirts during their services.

In the given examples, a certain group or people is given favor than the other. In number one,

males are given more power or authority than females. Number two, students who are interested to study
in a school but don’t share the same religion can’t be admitted. And lastly, women who want to attend
church services aren’t allowed to go if they don’t wear the prescribed clothes for the said services.

3. Prejudice - The two privileged men judge the man by his status.
4. Prejudice - Boys making assumptions because of their different social and cultural backgrounds.
5. Bias - Someone can be biased depending on which angle he views the situation.

3rd Quarter, SY 2020-2021
ENGLISH 9 (Week 3)
Lesson: Fact and Opinion

Name of Learner: ____________________________________ Date: _________________

Grade and Section: ___________________________________ Score: ______________

I. Introductory Concept:
It is assumed that the reliability of a source of information involves two dimensions: its relevance
and its truthfulness. A source is said to be relevant if it provides useful information regarding a given
question of interest. In contrast, a source is said to be truthful if it actually supplies the information it
possesses.

You have learned from the previous

lesson the difference between bias and
prejudice. Today, let’s discuss how to determine the
relevance and truthfulness of the text particularly in
determining whether the statement is fact or
opinion.

II. Learning Skills from the MELCs:

 Competency: Determine the relevance and truthfulness of the ideas presented in the
material viewed or read (EN9VC-IVa-10) (Applying)

Objectives:

 List down some statements that express fact and opinion (Remembering)
 Distinguish fact from opinion statements presented in the article (Understanding)
 Construct fact and opinion statements with the aid of pictures (Applying)

III. Review/Discussion:

Let’s play a game! Read the two sentences below and you’ll have to decide if they are Fact or
Opinion. Encircle the word of the correct answer. Are you ready? If yes, you may now begin.

1. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, III was the 15th 2. Kathryn Bernardo has a beautiful hair.
President of the Philippines.

FACT OPINION
FACT OPINION

Let’s see if you were able to get the correct answers. Check your work!

Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, III was the 15th Kathryn Bernardo has a beautiful hair.
President of the Philippines.

This statement is OPINION because it is

This statement is FACT because we can prove what YOU personally think. Just because
it to be true or false. If we were to look back you think Kathryn has beautiful hair does
into Philippine history, it will tell us that not mean that she actually has beautiful hair
Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, III really was the for everyone. We cannot prove this to be
15th president of the Philippines. true or false.
Telling whether the statement is a Fact or Opinion is definitely hard. Let’s try to understand more
about Fact and Opinion.

A Fact refers to the something true or real, which is backed up by evidence, documentation, etc. A Fact
should be based on observation or research, should also represents something that really happens and not
debatable since the information is true.

Examples:
a) Ester R. Santillan is the principal of Luy-a National High School.
b) Luy-a National High School was founded since 1973.
c) Modular Distance Learning is the new delivery mode of instruction in Luy-a National High School.

An Opinion is what a person believes or thinks about something. It is actually your assumption or personal
view and it is debatable because opinion is not always true. However, one’s views can be valid depending
on the bases and pragmatics.

Examples:
a) Students of Luy-a National High School hate to answer the self-learning modules.
b) Ma’am Ronalyn Edim is the most beautiful teacher in Luy-a National High School.
c) Luy-a National High School is the best school for me.

✓ Facts and opinions help us determine how true a statement is, thus, in any kind of article, facts
and opinion can be used in developing the paragraph to add details on the main point. Below is the
comparison chart for you to understand better the difference between fact and opinion.

FACT OPINION
ACTIVITY 2:

Direction: Read the article entitled, That Little Island before proceeding to the activity below.

That little Island

Fishermen, soldiers, residents and foreigners, all of them have story to tell about Scarborough Shoal. What
makes this small ring of reefs a piece of last slice of cake? Philippines claims this as its territory because of
its location. It lies about 230 kilo meters from the Philippines while China has a distance of 650 kilo meters
from its nearest island. It is abundant in marine life, so many fishermen from three claiming countries
benefit on it. The island is perfect for a security outpost because it has served as place for Philippine
military activities and command post for defense since then. Later on Chinese found out that this is also
the best place for their defense as shown in their new built outpost with jetfighters and missiles. These
three main reasons on claiming the island ruined the friendship of Philippines and China. When the dispute
was brought to international tribunal and the decision was ignored by China, this behavior started many
other harassments and advancements of Chinese over Filipinos. Thus, the claim for this piece of island will
surely run generation to generation.

To check whether you have concrete understanding about the lesson, distinguish fact from opinion
statements presented in the article. Write YES if the statement is fact and write NO if the statement is an
opinion. Write your answers on the blanks.
