1405-221: Homework No.

Question 1. Many people believe that the average number of Facebook friends is 130.
The population standard deviation is 38.2. A random sample of 50 high
school students in a particular county revealed that the average number of
Facebook friends was 162. At 𝛼 = 0.05, is there sufficient evidence to
conclude that the mean number of friends is greater than 130? Perform the
following steps to answer the question:
a. State the hypotheses and identify the claim.
b. Find the critical value(s).
c. Compute the test value.
d. Make the decision.

Question 2. The average strawberry has approximately 200 seeds. A very patient
student selected a random sample of 10 strawberries and found a sample
mean of 185.2 seeds with a standard deviation of 10. At the 0.05 level of
significance, can it be concluded that the mean is less than 200? Perform
the following steps to answer the question:
a. State the hypotheses and identify the claim.
b. Find the critical value(s).
c. Compute the test value.
d. Make the decision.

Question 3. A researcher claims that the standard deviation of the number of deaths
annually from tornadoes in the United States is less than 35. If a random
sample of 11 years had a standard deviation of 32, is the claim believable?
Use 𝛼 = 0.05 and assume that the number of deaths annually are normally
distributed.

Question 4. A random sample of monthly gasoline prices was taken from 2005 and
from 2011. The samples are shown. Using 𝛼 = 0.01, and assume that the
gasoline prices are normally distributed can it be concluded that gasoline
cost less in 2005?
2005 2.017 2.468 2.502 2.701 3.13 2.56
2011 3.345 3.807 4.074 3.972 3.553 4.192 3.424

Perform the following steps to answer the question:

a. State the hypotheses and identify the claim.
b. Find the critical value(s).
c. Compute the test value.
d. Make the decision

Question 5. Summer reading programs are very popular with children. At the Citizens
Library, Team Ramona read an average of 23.2 books with a standard
deviation of 6.1. There were 21 members on this team. Team Beezus read
an average of 26.1 books with a standard deviation of 2.3. There were 25
members on this team. Did the variances of the two teams differ? Use 𝛼 =
0.05.

Question 6. A random sample of 100 patrons from three different restaurants, each of
which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, were asked which meal they
purchased. The results are shown in the table below. Check the data for a
dependent relationship at 𝛼 = 0.01.
Perform the following steps to answer the question:
a. State the hypotheses and identify the claim.
b. Find the critical value(s).
c. Compute the test value.
d. Make the decision.

Question 7. A group of department store buyers viewed a new line of dresses and gave
their opinions of them. The results were:
Number of Buyers
Outstanding 47
Excellent 45
Very good 40
Good 39
Fair 35
Undesirable 34
Total 240

Because the largest number (47) indicated the new line is outstanding, the
head designer thinks that this is a mandate to go into mass production of
the dresses. The head sweeper (who somehow became involved in this)
believes that there is not a clear mandate and claims that the opinions are
evenly distributed among the six categories. He further states that the slight
differences among the various counts are probably due to chance. Test the
null hypothesis that there is no significant difference among the opinions
of the buyers at the .01 level of significance.
