Ideological foundation of Education

Ideology is a set of beliefs, values and ideas of a group and a nation.

Islam is the code and mode of life. All of its teachings emanate from Quran and
Sunnah. It is a Din, which has its code, mode, teaching and preaching style. Its principles are
everlasting.

According to Quran

Knowledge in Islam is considered as the greatest gift of Allah. Islamic philosophy derives
its origin from the spirit of teachings of the Quran and Hadith. The word Quran literally
means reading or recitation. Islamic education system comprises of the following principles:

 Belief in the oneness, absolute power, mercy and supreme compassionateness of the
creator.
 Belief in the accountability of human actions in another existence.
 Total submission to the God’s will and no subjugation to passions.

According to Hadith
Hadith is the index and vehicle of the Sunnah which gives concrete shape to the Quranic
teachings. A Hadith is a statement of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Some of Hadith
are:

 He dies not who takes from learning.


 The ink of the scholar is more holy than the blood of the martyr.
 He who leaves home in search of knowledge walks in the path of Allah.

Characteristics of Islamic philosophy of education:

 Allah is the ultimate reality.


 Education is free and compulsory for the youth.
 Islamic system of education establishes a balance between the individual and society.
 Education is meant for character building and preparation for life.
 Education is treated as a blessing for both the worlds.

 Allah is the ultimate reality.


 Allah is one who can be worshipped.
 Allah is all knowing, living, and everlasting.

Concept of Knowledge

The knowledge according to Islam has three stages;

 Deductive knowledge
 Observatory knowledge
 Empirical knowledge

Concept of Values

Values may be:

 Spiritual
 Material

Objectives of Education

1. To make the people understand the powers given to them and make to use of these
according to the will of Allah.
2. To make the people understand preach and follow the path of Islamic teachings.
3. To prepare the people to explore the treasures of Allah and use these for the
betterment of humanity.
4. To shape the character of an individual this should look like a Muslim in the true
sense.
5. To enable an individual to capture the universe for the benefit of humanity.
Educational Process

Educational process based on:

 Student
 Teacher
 Curriculum
 Teaching methods

Student

Student’s character building is given importance because she is supposed to be an innocent


soul.

Teacher

 Teacher is given the status of a spiritual father.


 Teacher is supposed to have the qualities of tolerance, patience, hardworking, honesty
and punctuality.
 Teacher is free to use the method of teaching which he supposes the best.

Curriculum

 It should have two essential parts revealed knowledge and acquired knowledge.
 Revealed knowledge is included in the curriculum without any change and is
compulsory for all.
 The acquired knowledge, which is beneficial for humanity, is included in the
curriculum and is not compulsory for all.
