SCIENCE 4
LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET QUARTER 3

Learning Competency with code:

 Identify the different kinds of force.
 Know the effects of force when applied to an object

Background Information for Learner:

 Force - is a push or pull applied on an object.
 There are two types of force:
1. A contact force is when two objects directly come in contact or touch each other.
 One kind of contact force is friction. It is a force that opposes or counteracts. Rough
surfaces increase friction or resistance.

Example:
Feel the under soles of your rubber shoes. They have bumpy surfaces to prevent you from sliding
when running. That is why you wear them during your Physical Education activities and not your
leather shoes.

 Another common contact force is applied force. It is the force applied or placed on an object.
Examples:
when you kick a ball to make it roll, pull on the rope of a
toy car to get it moving, or when opening and closing the door.

2. A non-contact forces are forces applied to an object without directly touching them.

 Gravitational force is a common example of noncontact force. Notice that no matter

how high you throw a ball up in the air, it always falls back to the ground
 Another noncontact force is magnetism. Magnetic force only attracts iron and steel
 Effects of the force:
1. Force can make an object move. An object that is not moving can move when force is
applied.
2. Force can stop a moving object. You can stop a moving ball by blocking it.
3. Force can change the speed of a moving object. It can either make an object go faster or
slow it down.
4. Force can change the size and shape of an object. Try crumpling a piece of paper. Did the
shape of the paper change? You applied force when you crumpled that piece paper.
5. Force can change the direction of an object. Did you notice how the flag was raised during
flag ceremony? Force was applied when the rope was pulled to raise the flag. The pulling of the
rope changed the direction of the flag from downward to upward.
