TUTORIAL 2
KINEMATICS IN ONE DIMENSION

1. You are driving home from school steadily at 95 km h for 130 km. It then begins to rain
and you slow to 65 km h. you arrive home after driving 3 hours and 20 minutes.
(a) How far is your hometown from school?
(b) What was your average speed?

2. A sports car accelerates from rest to 95 km h in 6.2 s. What is its average acceleration in
m s2 ?

3. An object moving at initial velocity of 9.0 ms -1 accelerates uniformly at a rate 3.0 ms -2.
Calculate the velocity and the distance travelled by the object 2.5 s later.
[16.5 ms-1, 31.9 m]

4. Figure 1 below shows a velocity-time graph for a moving object X.

a) The total displacement of the object.

b) The acceleration of the object at t = 18 s

5. On a dry road, the maximum deceleration that can be achieved by a car when the brake is
applied is estimated to be 5.0 ms-2. Assuming that this deceleration remains constant, find:
a. The time taken for the car to come to rest it is travelling at 25.0ms -1 initially.
b. The distance travelled by the car before it comes to rest.
[5.0 s, 62.5 m]
FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS I (PHY130)

6. A car starts from rest and accelerates with constant acceleration of 3 ms -2 for 12 s.
a. What is the final velocity of the car?
b. What is the total distance travelled?
[36 ms-1, 216 m]

7. A car which was moving at a velocity of 24 ms -1 stopped after its brakes were applied. The
distance from the instance the brakes were applied to the instance when it stopped was 480
m. Find:
a. The deceleration of the car
b. The time taken to stop the car
[0.6 ms-2, 40 s]

8. A ball is thrown vertically downward with initial velocity 14 ms -1 from a 10 m building. The
velocity of the ball right before it strikes the ground is 20 ms -1. Calculate the time taken to
reach the ground.
[0.61 s]

9. A tennis ball is thrown vertically upwards from a 8 m high roof. If after 2 s, the ball reaches
its initial point on its way down, at what speed will it hit the ground?

10. A ball is thrown directly downward with an initial speed of 10.0 ms -1 from a height of 20.0 m.
How long does the ball take to reach the ground? What is the speed of ball when it hits the
ground?

11. If an object is thrown upwards with an initial velocity 20 ms -1 from a building of height 50 m,
calculate:
a. The maximum height
b. The time of flight
c. Its velocity when it strikes the ground.
[20.4 m, 70.4 m, 5.83 s, -37.2 ms-1]
