History of Afro-Latin American Music

7
The term Afro-Latin was used to imply a kind of music from Latin American
countries such as Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, etc. that has an African influenced
especially to those who used to be enslaved. When slaves were brought over the
only thing they possessed is their culture – music, dance and spiritual beliefs. They
tried to preserve their rich and diverse culture as possible. This led to the birth of
new musical development wherein the fusion of two diverse cultures brought one
interesting music. Thus, Afro-Latin American Music is an evolution from different
cultures that immersed together and influenced both musically.

The history of Afro-Latin American Music begun during the conquest of

Europe and during the times of slave trade elements in Africa and Caribbean. Some
of the slaves especially in North America were not allowed to play instruments such

not only for entertainment but used for communication. This instrument was called
“talking drums”, a kind of percussion instrument used to send messages such as
their history, lamentation, jubilation and even their struggles and successes.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, these rhythms developed, spread and
canonized in the Caribbean and brought a new and unique musical development
where fusion of Latin Music was evident.
