Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

In late December 2019, Chinese health authorities reported an outbreak of

pneumonia of unknown origin in Wuhan, Hubei Province. A few days later, the genome of

a novel coronavirus was released. Since its discovery, the virus has spread globally,

causing thousands of deaths and having an enormous impact on our health systems and

economies.

This COVID-19 pandemic is the defining global health crisis of our time and the

greatest challenge we have faced since World War Two. But this pandemic is much more

than a health crisis. And it's also an unusual socio-economic crisis. It can create

devastating social, economic, and political effects that will leave deep and longstanding

scars. The global pandemic has dramatically changed the way things are done, not just in

the Philippines but worldwide. Many countries implement their preventive protocol like

total lockdown and social distancing. The Philippines implemented various actions,

including community quarantine in Metro Manila, which expanded to Luzon and other

parts of the country; besides, the Philippines also implement preventive measures such

as facemask, face shield, and proper hand sanitizing.

As recommended by WHO (World Health Organization), hand hygiene is the primary

prevention step in transmitting the disease. Hygiene refers to activities that encourage

health conservation and disease prevention, primarily through cleanliness, such as

washing hands, coughing in the elbow.

EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 2

One of the most frequent symptoms of Covid-19 is fever, and several healthcare

establishments and facilities have introduced temperature restrictions to help avoid the

possible transmission of the virus.

Theoretical Framework

Community Transmission. Given that temperature checking and hand sanitizing

are standard, according to WHO, the number 1 transmission classification of Covid-19

cases worldwide is through community transmission.

Community transmission is when there is no apparent source of origin of the

infection in a new community. It happens when you can no longer identify who became

infected after being exposed to someone who interacted with people from the other

infected communities.

Some things in a market can help prevent the spread of coronavirus, but all of

them have disadvantages, whereas they can still spread the virus to each other.

Manual hand dispensers do require greater regular cleaning of shared touchpoints

than automatic dispensers to prevent cross-contamination. The Proximity between the

person measuring and the person measuring possess some risk of infection spread.

Fingerprint verification systems require the user to make direct physical contact with the

scanner for a specified duration for the user's biometric pattern to be correctly read and

measured.

It may increase the possibility of contamination with harmful microbial pathogens or

of cross-contamination of food and water by subsequent users.

Conceptual Framework

The researcher applied the research paradigm presented in Figure 1 to develop an

automatic hand sanitizer and thermometer with a monitoring system as a basis for covid-

19 tracing. In conceptualizing the whole process of this research, the researcher adopted

the Input-Process-Output (IPO) template.

The vital data that served as requirements for the development of the study were

stated in the input block and were categorized as follows:

1. Research Design is the theories and basis of prototype ideas that served as

prerequisites for the further development of the study;

2. Software Requirements are the computer programs or applications that would

use in the development of the system;

3. Hardware Requirements include the list of necessary components and modules

that would be integrated for the system's whole function to develop.

The steps to be followed in developing the study are presented in the research

paradigm block. These steps would lead to this research title, "Internet of Things: Data

Integration System for Covid-19 tracing." as stated in the research paradigm's output

block. Also, a feedback block was included in the research paradigm, which is interpreted

as a closed system for the study's research paradigm.

Several topics became prerequisites for the development of the system. These are

the techniques in conducting safety monitoring of student and its classifications based on

the World Health Organization, the processes involved in monitoring individual entering

the school facilities, the methods of sending data to a facilitator for the safety of each

person and their conditions, and the knowledge in the integration of different modules

used in a Raspberry pi 3 microcontrollers.

The computer applications used in the development of the system are the Raspberry

pi IDE. It is essential to have a deeper understanding of these software applications to

have their efficient use in the design and the development of the source codes. The

system also requires different hardware components and modules to perform their

functions for the system. These the Raspberry pi IDE as the microcontroller units, the

Ultrasonic Sensor for temperature sensing, QR code Module for scanning and application,

LCD for display,

The processes involved in the research were the different methods and models used

in achieving the objectives of this study. An Experimental Method was used for attaining

the answers in monitoring the data accuracy of the sensors in performing their functions in

the system, which are the ultrasonic sensor. The research also utilizes the Descriptive

Method to determine the device users in terms of different criteria. For the whole process

of constructing the system, the prototyping model was incorporated. This model consists

of various steps: Gathering Data and Analysis, Designing the Prototype, Building the

Prototype, Evaluation, Prototype Refinement, and Implementation.

These inputs, processes, and feedback produce the outcome of this study.

Statement of the Problem

In this Covid-19 pandemic period, which is a global outbreak, Sanitizing

hands and not touch everywhere is a must to prevent Covid-19. However, pressing the

bottle nozzle, open the door of offices, shops, unhygienic factories

This study aimed to design, implement and integrate the standard preventive

measure to minimize human interaction. This will contribute through modern

technologies by utilizing IoT. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following:

1. What is the exact condition of body temperature of the student, employee, or even

visitor entering the facility?

2. What is the level of capability of a system to monitor and gather the data in terms of;

2.1 Number of entries.

2.2 Bad connection

3. What is the level of acceptability in respondents' assessment on the developed

Integration and Monitoring System in terms of the following characteristics;

3.1 Functionality;

3.2 Reliability; and

3.3 Usability?
EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 7

Scope and Limitations

The system is capable in a controlled area with an I.D. system using QR Code

Scanner and classifies them according to the server's employee or visitor system.

The ultrasonic sensor is used to validate the hand's location under the outlet of the

sanitizer device and send a motion to the microcontroller, which represents dispensing

the alcohol/sanitizer. The amount of sanitizer/alcohol is the same every time.

The system also monitors the body temperature and personal data in the server

using an ultrasonic sensor and generated QR code. The accuracy testing of QR scanner

was done on Feb.25, 2021. During accuracy testing, the plug n play QR code scanner is

installed on the laptop and read the system code.

Two microcontrollers are used in the system. The first one is a Raspberry pi 3 with

Quad-Core 1.2GHz Broadcom BCM2837 64bit CPU, has 1GB RAM, BCM43438 wireless

LAN, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) on board. It also has 100 Base Ethernet, 40-pin

extended GPIO, 4 USB 2 ports, 4 Pole stereo output, composite video port, and a full-

size HDMI. Raspberry pi 3 has a CSI camera port for connecting a Raspberry Pi camera

and a DSI display port for connecting a Raspberry Pi touchscreen display. Micro SD port

for loading your operating system and storing data. They upgraded switched Micro USB

power source up to 2.5A. It contains everything needed to support the microcontroller.

The modules connected to the Raspberry pi 3 are the K9 Pro, ultrasonic sensor, and

LCD. The other microcontroller is a Raspberry pi 3 with 40 GPIO pins that allow the

Raspberry Pi to control and monitor by being connected to electronic circuits.

This conduct of this research started in January 2020, where necessary initial

information was collected and would be used in April 2020 at its locale. The device would

be installed in Eulogio "Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology

Significance of the Study

Engr. Edgar R. Sision, Technical Adviser of ECE, discussed the methods of EARIST

monitoring the employee and visitor of the school. When the employee register using our

system, it will generate code; all the details, including the employee's picture, will save in

the database. After that, it will generate the code for self-assessment for covid-19 tracing.

Using this system together with our device will help to monitor and lessen the interaction.

Because the covid-19 case is increasing rapidly,

Many schools, offices, and establishments do not have proper monitoring; instead,

they rely on the manually operated form. The completion of this research will benefit the

following:

Schools and Offices. Will be the first ones who will benefit from this study. They can

be easily monitored and conduct tracing regarding employee medical history whenever

they enter the facility.

Concerned Departments. The concerned departments in the local government units,

such as in the barangays and the municipality, will also be aware of the monitoring

system for covid-19. This will help them to prepare themselves for the necessary actions

they may take in times of pandemic.

Future Researchers. This research is open to any other future researches that will

enhance or widen the coverage of the study. Future researchers will have initial data as

stated in this study which they can use for the further development of their research

which can focus on data monitoring, preventive measure, and safety protocol.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND STUDIES

EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 10

The researcher gathered several related studies from articles in journals and

websites used in the development of this study. Some of these focus on the Covid-19

virus and Covid-19 tracing. These studies are related to how we combat the spreading of

the Covid-19 virus.

Combatting Covid-19 Virus

This study sought to provide a solution in addressing the risk of the Covid-19 virus.

The outcome that the study will acquire may be used to further control and observed

safety protocols in various organizations.

Due to the global pandemic of COVID-19 Mohsin Kamal et al., (2020), there is an

urgent need to utilize existing technologies to their full potential. Internet of Things (IoT)

is regarded as one of the most trending technologies with great potential in fighting

against the coronavirus outbreak. The IoT comprises a scarce network in which the IoT

devices sense the environment and send valuable data on the Internet. This paper

examines the current status of IoT applications related to COVID-19, identifies their

deployment and operational challenges, and suggests possible opportunities to contain

the pandemic further.

According to Mod Javaid et al. (2021) IOT's Sensor-based technology provides an

excellent capability to reduce the risk of surgery during complicated cases and helpful

for COVID-19 type pandemic. In the medical field, IoT focus is to help perform the

treatment of different COVID-19 issues precisely. It makes the surgeon's job easier by

minimizing risk and increasing the overall performance. By using this technology, doctors

can easily detect changes in critical parameters of the COVID-19 patient. This

information-based service opens up new healthcare opportunities as it moves towards

EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 11

an information system's best way to adapt world-class results. It enables the

improvement of treatment systems in the hospital. Medical students can now be better

trained for disease detection and well guided for the future course of action.

IEEE (2020) is has a comprehensive review of the COVID-19 itself, in which they

explore its clinical features, transmission mechanism, and diagnosis procedures.

Following this, they discuss the stages the disease goes through in the course of its

spread. They also list the various treatment efforts being made to put an end to the

pandemic and the preventive measure to be followed until the time possible. To

calibrate the disastrous impact of the COVID-19, we also take a broad look at the state

of the global economy following its outbreak. In the particular discussion post, we

dissect the various technological interventions made in COVID-19 impact

management. Primarily, IEEE discussion focuses on using emerging technologies such

as IoT, drones, A.I, blockchain, and 5G in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19

pandemic. Till the time a cure for this disease surfaces, the responsibility to

manage and limit its effects rests largely with these technologies.

Mwaffaq Otoom et al. (2020) proposed a system that would employ an Internet of

Things (IoT) framework to collect real-time symptom data from users to early identify

suspected coronaviruses cases, to monitor the treatment response of those who have

already recovered from the virus, and to understand the nature of the virus by

collecting and analyzing relevant data. The framework consists of five main

components: Symptom Data Collection and Uploading (using wearable sensors),

Quarantine/Isolation Center, Data Analysis Center (that uses machine learning

algorithms), Health Physicians, and Cloud Infrastructure. To quickly identify potential

EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 12

coronaviruses cases from this real-time symptom data, this work proposes eight

machine learning algorithms: Support Vector Machine (SVM), Neural Network, Naïve

Bayes, and K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN), Decision Table, Decision Stump, OneR, and

ZeroR. An experiment was conducted to test these eight algorithms on a real COVID-

19 symptom dataset after selecting the relevant symptoms.

In line with Peng Hu (2020), The recent COVID-19 pandemic has become a

significant threat to human health and well-being. Non-pharmaceutical interventions

such as contact tracing solutions are essential to contain the spreads of COVID-19-like

infectious diseases. However, current contact tracing solutions are fragmented with

limited use of sensing technologies and centered on monitoring individuals' interactions

without an analytical framework for evaluating effectiveness. Therefore, we need to first

explore generic architecture for contact tracing in the context of today and Internet of

Things (IoT) technologies based on a broad range of applicable sensors. A new

architecture for IoT-based solutions to contact tracing is proposed, and its overall

effectiveness for disease containment is analyzed based on the traditional

epidemiological models with the simulation results. The proposed work aims to provide

a framework for assisting future designs and evaluating IoT-based contact tracing

solutions, and enabling data-driven collective efforts on combating current and future

infectious diseases.

Based on Elliote Mbugne (2020), Integrating emerging technologies into COVID-19

EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 13

contact tracing is seen as a viable option that policymakers, health practitioners, and

I.T

technocrats need to consider in mitigating coronavirus's spread seriously. Further

research is also required to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the utilization of

emerging technologies in contact tracing while observing the security and privacy of

people in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

Besides, by IEEE (2020), the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has

unexpectedly affected the world. The human race is battling against the pandemic

while schools, universities, industries, hospitals, and governments seek new methods

and technologies to continue their usual operations seamlessly. In response, this

article presents how 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) related technologies can be

efficiently utilized and developed to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Several use-

cases on how 5G and IoT can be enablers to provide innovative solutions in the areas

of health, contact tracing, education, retail, and supply chains, e-government/ remote

office/ information sharing, smart manufacturing, and factory automation, e-tourism,

and entertainment are presented along with their technical requirements and

challenges.

Prototyping
EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 14

Prototyping serves to provide specifications for a natural, working system rather

than a theoretical one. In some design workflow models, creating a prototype (a process

sometimes called materialization) is the step between the formalization and

the evaluation of an idea.

According to Natalia (2020), Prototyping refers to an initial stage of a software

release in which developmental evolution and product fixes may occur before a bigger

release is initiated. These activities can sometimes be called a beta phase or beta

testing, where an initial project gets evaluated by a smaller class of users before full

development.

Prototyping is the process of creating a sample product to be tested in the "real

world."

Environment. This sample product, also known as a prototype, is "an original model,

form or an instance that serves as a basis for other processes" and is used to improve

design iterations before the product reaches its final stage. (Angelle Erickson, 2019)

In addition to Angelle Erickson (2019), Prototyping's main benefit is that it results in a

faster and more effective design cycle. Because prototypes allow companies to test their

design in the "real-world" environment, it is easier to identify potential problems and

prevent costly mistakes down the road. Designers can pivot more quickly and interact

with the design to troubleshoot and improve any problem areas.

Accuracy

According to Akash Patel (2020), accuracy is the instrument's ability to measure the

accurate value. In other words, it is the closeness of the measured value to a standard or
EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 15

actual weight. The accuracy can be obtained by taking the small readings. The small

task reduces the error of the calculation.

Accuracy represents how close a measurement comes to its actual value. This is

important because inadequate equipment, insufficient data processing, or human error

can lead to inaccurate results that are not very close to the truth. ( Kevin Carr, 2020 )

Functionality, Reliability and Usability Assessment

The fourth specific problem is about the respondents' agreement level based on

their assessment on the device on it is functionality, reliability, and usability.

Functionality, reliability, and usability are defined in ISO/IEC 9126. They are part of

the representation of the quality level of software. As the developed device has software

in the program's presence in the microcontroller, the framework of the device quality can

be assessed or evaluated.

Jung and Hong (2012) assessed the quality control of software based on

functionality, reliability, and usability. They were able to evaluate quantity. An evaluation

instrument can be developed following the subtopics for each criterion to gather

quantitative results.

Based on the study of McNamara and Kirakowski (2006), functionality and usability

are needed to design the evaluation of a technological product. Functionality is a

technical issue that refers only to the product itself. It should be evaluated on what does

the product does. Usability, on the other hand, is based on the product-user interaction.

Functionality, reliability, and usability were also the three components of ISO/IEC

9216 used as criteria by Mata-Domingo (2018) to evaluate the effectiveness and

usability of the developed collaborative interaction management system. Each of these

EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 16

characteristics is defined by some indicators constructed in the research instrument to

obtain the participants' responses.

Synthesis of the Reviewed Literature and Studies

The cited related literature and studies were used as foundations in the

development of this study. These also served as a basis for formulating the steps in

answering the specific problems stated in Chapter 1. A review of the history of the

Covid-19 in terms of the cases, especially in contact tracing, is essential in

elaborating the School Establishments' need in providing data about the employee

and visitor. The developed device is intended to serve as a basis for covid-19

measures, so studies about covid-19 were also gathered and reviewed. It is essential

to determine the concept and steps on assessing the accuracy of a measurement.

Literature about these was examined to develop the steps in determining the

accuracy of the sensors used for the system. Some studies about the use of QR

codes and ultrasonic sensor in monitoring and temperature were also included in this

chapter as echoes of how these components were used in the previous studies and

how they can be utilized in the purpose of the study. About the assessment of the

quality of the device and software, studies based on the ISO/IEC 9126 were

collected to support the claims on the process of the evaluation of the device based

on its functionality, reliability, and usability. Other components such as the Arduino

microcontroller, Node MCU esp8266 were also included in the list of related literature

as references on how they will be integrated into the system.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the fundamental steps taken with the development of IoT-

Data Integration System for Covid-19 Tracing. It describes the step-by-step process

taken by the team in the completion of the project. Included here are the project's

fundamentals and essential details that made the proposed project possible and

answered the research problems.

Methods of Research

The planned project is used to avoid coronavirus transmission to the office,

hospitals, establishments, and several others. Through utilizing an integration device, it

will at least reduce the propagation of the virus in many workers. It also allows the security

guard not to make contact with the individual entering the establishment because of our

touchless devices. Thanks to our IoT system, the administration can now track the

individual entering the institution with their Covid-19 record. Using the android application

more time will be minimized by filling out the form so anyone will now have a permanent

record on their devices. It could alter based on what happens to them every day.

Description of Research Instrument Used

The researcher developed a research instrument that will be used to evaluate the

prototype and answer the fourth specific problem. There are three criteria indicated in the

evaluation tool. These are functionality, reliability, and usability. These criteria were

based on ISO/IEC 9126. Functionality is defined as a set of attributes or functions and

their specified properties. The functions are those that satisfy the needs stated or implied.

Therefore, these should focus on the expected functions to be performed by the system,

such as accuracy of body temperature and the sending of data to the admin.

Reliability focuses on the device's capability or software to maintain its performance

level under stated conditions and periods. This would imply that reliability focuses on the

accuracy of the data monitored and sent. Usability can be measured on how the user

would interact with the device regarding its functions.

Each criterion has five items, and the respondents will answer the instrument based

on how they agree to each item.

Material Requirements

Several materials are needed for the development of the system. A control system is

required to efficiently control the function and performance of different sensors and

modules. The ultrasonic sensor and QR Code Scanner is needed to detect the required
EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 20

parameters, namely body temperature, and person's data. A microcontroller unit

(RASPBERRY PI) is used for monitoring and storing the data of the employee. The MCU

also transmits the data to the Raspberry pi module to be sent to the admin. The rest of

the components are defined and discussed on how they function on the system.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher used the system in gathering data to solve the specific problems

stated in Chapter 1.

The first specific problem is about the stages in the development of the system.

These were stated in steps from the gathering of requirements up to the implementation.

In the second specific problem, the researcher installed the system on the EARIST

with the help of the school officials for monitoring the person entering. Their manual

method of registration is through a physical form.

The third specific problem requires the accuracy of the body temperature used in the

system to be tested.

The fourth specific problem aims to determine the assessment level of the users of

the system.

Chapter 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter includes the presentation, analysis, and interpretation of the data

gathered. The sequence is based on the specific research problems as stated in Chapter
EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 21

1. Necessary figures and tables are included to present the topics discussions in detail

and answer the issues said.

1. Stages in the Development of System: Using Prototyping Method

The prototyping model is widely used as a system development model. The process

starts by gathering all the requirements, including articles and journals, to strengthen the

study's feasibility. Designing the prototype was the next stage in the prototyping model. A

quick design of the prototype was created, leading to the next step, building the prototype.

The documents used in making the initial prototype that supports the desired functions

were gathered. Once there were problems or malfunctions, the prototype is refined further

to eliminate them. The process continues before the user approves the prototype and can

be finally used by the community.

Figure 3 shows the stages in the development of the system using the prototyping

method.

Stages in the Development of the System Using Prototyping Method

The first stage in the prototyping method is the Requirements Gathering and Analysis.

The prototyping method starts with gathering and analyzing the components needed. The

data were gathered and studied from an article. The plans and ideas for the product and

components to be used are evaluated according to their specifications, costs,

functionalities, and availability.

The second stage is to Design the Prototype. The initial design would be introduced

before the actual construction of the project. The method of the integration of the

temperature sensor with automatic hand sanitizer and QR Code scanner will be

constructed, finalized, and decided on the appropriate and practical materials to be used.

This included the construction of a sample simulation and testing for the input sensor. The

materials to be used for the sensors and components were selected with the help of their

specification sheets and advice from experts.

Figure 4. Block Diagram of the System

EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 23

Figure 4 displays the block diagram and interconnection of each component in the

system. The diagram compromise for the center is Raspberry pi 3 Micro-controller; for the

input, we have a thermal scanner, which is responsible for checking the temperature at

the same time it will display the result. Next is the hand dispenser sensor, QR Code

Scanner, and Generated QR code. All of this input will be processed by your micro-

controller,

Raspberry pi 3, and then translate to the output to display for the second segment for

the temperature, buzzer for alarm system, and submersible pump dispensing the alcohol.

The third stage in the model is Build the Prototype. Modification of the gathered data

from the design phase will be used to construct and develop the actual prototype.

Different parameters will be tested to prove the efficiency and feasibility of the system.
EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 24

Figure 5. AutoCAD Sketch of System Physical Component

Figure 5 shows the AutoCAD sketch of the positioning of the components of the IoT:

Data Integration System for Covid-19 Tracing. From the figure, the sanitizer and QR

Scanner is placed at the top of the device. This will help the server to collect the data

without physical interventions. The component box, where the microcontrollers, display,

and circuit boards are located, was placed ate the middle part where it can be easily

reached and

viewed. The ultrasonic sensor is placed at the bottom, running from the base of the

device. This is to sense the hand motion for dispensing the alcohol.

Evaluation is the fourth stage. After building the prototype, the device will be

evaluated. The functionality of the device is the critical factor that needs to be

demonstrated so that the evaluators can carefully examine the prototype. The evaluators

will assess the product for further enhancement. This stage is essential to determine how

acceptable is the device is to be implemented in the research locale.

The fifth stage is Prototype Refinement. After the prototype presentation, all remarks

and recommendations of the evaluators were recorded. Based on the advice of the

evaluators, changes in the system and features were added. In the previous phase,

applying the changes in the prototype's schematic and updating the added features in the

monitoring system were implemented.

EULOGIO AMANG RODRIGUEZ INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 25

The last stage in the prototyping model is implementation. In this phase, the product

will be evaluated and had satisfied the need of the locale. This is the working device and

will be implemented, but the maintenance and progress of the device are monitored to

prevent failures.

As stated in the research locale, the system device would be installed in the Entrance

Gate of Eulogio "Amang" Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology in Sampaloc,

Manila. Figure 6 will be the installed device's sketch.
