LotR Scenario Book

The „T‟ Book of Scenarios

This scenario book was Written and Designed by Travis and Jeremy and will be used
for any Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Games Tournaments run by either of us.
The scenario pack is divided into two sections. The first section deals with common
scenario specific rules that will be in effect in this tournament. The second section provides
the scenarios that will be used in any of the tournaments.
If you have any questions about these scenarios please contact the Tournament
Organiser (Travis) as soon as possible.

Common Scenario Specific Rules

Objective Markers
Each player must bring 2 objective markers to any tournament using these
scenarios.
These objective markers must be circular with a diameter of between 40-60mm. We
would recommend using Games Workshop cavalry or monster bases, but players are
welcome to create their own. The objective markers should be decorated in a way the suits
your army and will be included as part of the army for the purposes of painting scores and
best army voting.

Objective Marker Rules

 Objective markers count as impassable terrain. This means that models may not
move over the objective marker for any reason.
 Objective markers do not block a „models eye view‟ (see rulebook page 16). Even if
an objective marker is modelled is such a way that obscures the view of one model to
another, both models are assumed to be able to see each other.
 If a model chooses to shoot through an objective marker, the objective marker will
count as “in the way” of the target (see rulebook page 24).
 Objective markers are a new type of terrain. They may never be placed on any other
terrain types except hills.
 Objective markers must be set up no closer than 6” from any board edge.
 Objective markers may not be placed within 12” of another objective marker. See the
section below for the full method of placing objective markers.

Placing Objective Markers

Some scenarios require players to “place objective markers” before a game. This happens
after terrain has been set, but before either player has chosen a board edge or deployed any
models.
Objective markers are must be placed using the steps listed below. Note that 4th, 5th and
th
6 dot point in the objective marker rules (above) apply to placing objective markers.

1
LotR Scenario Book

 Both players roll a six sided die (D6). The player with the highest die roll (re-roll the
dice if there is a tie) is called Player A. The Player with the lowest dice roll is called
Player B.
 Player A places one of their own objective markers on the board following the usual
restrictions (in the objective marker rules section)
 Player B places one of their own objective markers.
 Player A places Player B‟s final objective marker.
 Player B places Player A‟s final objective marker.
 Both players must check the all objectives are placed legally (not placed on terrain
except hill; no closer than 6” to a board edge; no closer than 12” to any other
objective).
 If there is not enough legal places to place objectives markers, players must call the
umpire to move the terrain in order to allow for legal placement.

This means that both players would have placed one of their own objective markers, and
one of their opponents.

Capturing Objective Markers

Some scenarios require players to capture objective markers. Here are the rules for
capturing objectives:
 To capture an objective marker you must have more models with their base fully
within 3” of the marker
 An objective marker is considered to be unclaimed if no models have their base fully
within 3” of the objective marker.
 Models that have a base larger than 3” (Mumakil, Dragons) can still capture an
objective by being in base contact with the objective marker.
 If a model loses combat within 3” of an objective marker, model must move 1”
directly away from the objective marker. If the model cannot complete this move, it
will count as being trapped. Note that models on the winning side do not have to
move to create separation as this may move them away from the objective.

Leaving the Board

 Models may not voluntarily leave the board unless it specifically says so in the
scenario.
 A model is considered to have left the board if they come into contact with the board
edge as a part of their movement.
 Models that have left the board voluntarily are to be placed to one side so that they
can be used to calculate the results of the game.
 Models that have left the board do not count being killed. They are treated as being
alive at the end of the game, but may not return to the game for any reason.
 A force is considered Broken when there is 50% or less of their models remaining on
the board. Be careful about how many models leave the board voluntarily as this may
force you to take courage tests for being Broken.

2
LotR Scenario Book

Leaders
Each player must nominate a leader for their army.
See Legions of Middle-Earth pages 4-5 for rules about nominating leaders. Leaders
must be chosen when a player submits an army list, not before each game. Make sure that
you tell your opponent who your hero is before a game, as this model can have special rules
depending on the scenario.

Primary and Secondary Objectives

In the following four scenarios, each player has a primary and a secondary objective.
To gain the maximum points in a scenario, a player must complete both their objectives and
stop their opponent achieving either.
There are 20 points available for each scenario. A player scores 7 points for
completing their primary objective and 7 points for preventing their opponent from
completing their primary objective. A player can also get 3 points for completing their
secondary objective and 3 points for preventing their opponent from completing their
secondary objective.

Scoring
Use the following chart to determine the number of points each player will earn during the
game:

umpire to „shuffle‟ the terrain on the table for them. This must be done before any dice are
rolled for starting positions.

Layout (Objective Markers): Objective markers will not be used in this scenario.

Starting Positions:
 Roll a die to see which player sets up first.
 The player with the highest roll picks any table edge and deploys their entire
force within 6” of the chosen table edge.
 The player with the lowest roll then deploys their entire force within 6” of the
table edge directly opposite the player that deployed first.

Primary Objective: Get more models off your opponent’s board edge than your
opponent.
 Players are trying to get their models off their opponent‟s board edge.
 Refer to the rules on leaving the board on page 2 of this scenario pack.
 To achieve this objective, a player must either have equal or more models
leave the table voluntarily than their opponent. Models can only leave via their
opponent‟s board edge.
 Leaders can as 3 models if they voluntarily leave the board.
 If neither player has models that have voluntarily left the board or if both
players have the same number of models of the board, then neither player has
achieved this objective.

Secondary Objective: Break your opponents force before the end of the game.
 You will achieve this objective if 50% or more of your opponents force has
either been killed or has fled the battlefield due to a failed courage test.
 Models that have left the board voluntarily do not count as killed.

Ending the Game: The game ends at the end of the turn in which either one of the
following conditions has been met:
1. Time runs out.
2. Either player has 25% or less of their starting number of models on the board.

ask an umpire to „shuffle‟ the terrain on the table for them. This must be done before
any dice are rolled for starting positions.

Layout (Objective Markers): Set up objective markers as described on page 1 of

this scenario pack.

Keeping track of turns: You must keep track of the turn numbers throughout this
game. The game will end at the end of the tenth turn.

Starting Positions:
 Roll a die to see which player sets up first.
 The player with the highest roll picks any table edge and deploys their entire
force within 12 + D6” of the chosen table edge.
 The player with the lowest roll then deploys their entire force within 12 + D6”
of the table edge directly opposite the player that deployed first.

Primary and Secondary Objectives:

 After both players have chosen a table edge, but before the first turn, both
players secretly roll 2 dice (one dark die and one light die) and consult the
secret objective table below. These are your 2 objectives for the game.
 If you roll a double, you must re-roll the secondary objective die. You may not
re-roll the dice if you don‟t not like the objectives you have rolled.
 Place the dice you rolled with the number you rolled face up under a plastic
cup (provided by the organiser). Keep these dice covered.
Secret Objective Table
Roll Primary (dark die) or Secondary (light die) Objective
1 You must capture both of your own objective markers.
2 You must capture both of your opponent’s objective markers.
3 You must have more models in your opponent‟s deployment zone at the end of the game.
