Suicide Statistics

o Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.

o Close to 45,000 Americans commit suicide each year.

o Roughly 1,000,000 attempts are made each year.

o Men are 4x more likely to commit suicide than women.

o 51% of suicides are committed using fire arms.

o Doctors have the highest suicide rate of any profession averaging about 1

per day which is twice that of the general population.

o Depression is the leading cause of suicide in doctors which affects 12% of

male doctors and 19.5% of female doctors.

o Nurses are 23% more likely to commit suicide than the average population

of women.

o Nurses are 4 times more likely to commit suicide than professions outside

of the medical field.

o Doctors suicide rates are on the decline due to the support systems that

have been put into place but nurses suicide rates continue to rise.

o Depression among nursing students ranges from 20-30% and 85% of those

students are undiagnosed due to thoughts of embarrassment.
