1984 Book II: Ch.

1-4 Review

Options: I will set a timer for 15 minutes and ask you to use the full 15 minutes (but no more!) to
complete one of the tasks below. You should choose the one that seems most interesting to you. Upload
your completed work to Schoology.

Download this document, delete the options you don’t wish to pursue, and provide your work in this
space. If you’d rather work in your writer’s notebook, you are welcome to upload a photo from your
notebook.

Option One: The text’s only female character evolves from “the dark-haired girl from the Fiction
Department” to “Julia” during the second section. Create a character sketch to help your understanding.
You are to find textual evidence that reveals something about each of following traits.

 Her Motivations
 Her Appearance
 Her Behavior
 Her Activities and Jobs
 Her Past

Some pages to reference would be 125-126, 128-129, 130-133, and 153-156. You are to record your
findings on your paper and then answer this question in a few (3-4) sentences: Who is Julia and what
makes her tick?

Option Two: Watch the TED Talk about how to start a movement. After you watch the video, you are to
answer the following questions:

 How can the statement of “lone nut” relate to what Winston says about how “the lunatic was
simply a minority of one” (80)?
 What is the importance of the “first follower”? With this idea in mind, why is the relationship
between Winston and Julia important to developing a resistance/ movement against the Party?
 According to the TED Talk and your experience, why can’t everyone be a leader? With this idea
in mind, why does Winston think hope relies in the proles?
 Finally, how can Winston and Julia’s relationship be seen as a “political act”?

Option Three: The setting of Chapter Four is pivotal to Book Two. In order to understand it completely,
you should develop a sense of its space. For this option, you are to create (draw) a rendering of this
location. What is present in this spot? What features make it unique? You need to include specific
details in visual form. Finally, you are to answer this question, under your drawing: why does Winston
consider this room a “sanctuary”?
