Rationale

Project PPE (Portfolio Predicate on Exemplar) is a backup contingency response

of the Schools Division of Surigao del Sur for learning delivery and learning
resource which parallel to the on-going endeavors of the higher offices in the
Department. It is the utilization of a lesson exemplar that is streamlined in a
teacher-and-learner-friendly format to cater to the new classroom setup in light
of the COVID-19 health crisis. These exemplars will be paired with a self-
contained and self-instructional portfolio.

The portfolio is a deliberate collection of works that highlight a learner’s effort

that would enable the him/her to see his/her growth and achievement, ability to
reflect on his/her own work and ability to establish goals for future learning.

Introductory Message

For the teacher:

Welcome to the (Mathematics - 5 - First Quarter) Exemplar on ( Divisibility

Rules for 3, 6 and 9 )!

This exemplar was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

educators from different schools in the Division to assist you in helping the
learners meet the standards anchored on Most Essential Learning Competencies
(MELC) set by the Department while overcoming the constraints in schooling
brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this
also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

As a teacher, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
exemplar in the most fit modality. You also need to keep track of the learners'
progress while allowing them to manage their own learning through portfolio
assessments.

For the learner:

Welcome to the (Mathematics - 5 - First Quarter) _ Exemplar on _( Divisibility

This exemplar was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time.

2
You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being
an active learner, either at home or in school. To help you with this, this exemplar
comes with a Weekly Portfolio Assessment. Your teacher will provide you with a
template and you will be given a privilege to organize the portfolio in your own
creative way.

4. 55, 58, 63
5. 72, 84, 79

5
What is It

A number is divisible by another number if the result when divided is a

whole number. For instance, 8 when divided to 2, the quotient is 4. Since, 4 is
a whole number, therefore, 8 is divisible by 2.

Also, when a number is divided by a second number and the

remainder is zero, then the first number is said to be divisible by the second
number. The second number is called a divisor or a factor of the first number.

How do we know if a number is divisible by 3, 6 and 9? Here are the

rules:

1. A number is divisible by 3, if the sum of all the digits is divisible by 3.

Example:

(a) 63

6+3=9 The sum of 6 and 3 is 9

9÷3=3 9 when divided to 3, the quotient is 3

Therefore, 63 is divisible by 3 because the sum of all its digit

which is 9 is divisible by 3. 63 divided by 3, the quotient is 21.

(b) 102

1+0+2=3 The sum of 1, 0 and 2 is 3

3÷3=1 3 when divided to 3, the quotient is 1

Therefore, 102 is divisible by 3 because the sum of all its

digit which is 3 is divisible by 3. 102 divided by 3, the quotient is
34.

6
(c) 165

1 + 6 + 5 = 12 The sum of 1, 6 and 5 is 12

12 ÷ 3 = 4 12 when divided to 3, the quotient is 4

Therefore, 165 is divisible by 3 because the sum of all its

digit which is 12 is divisible by 3. 165 when divided to 3, the
quotient is 55.

(d) 218

2 + 1 + 8 = 11

The sum of all the digits of 218 is 11. It is not divisible by 3.

Therefore, 218 is not divisible by 3.

2. A number is divisible by 6 if the number is divisible by both 2 and 3.

Example:

(a) 126

Divisible by 2

126 The number is divisible by 2 because the

ones digit of the number is 6 which is an
even number.

Divisible by 3

1+2+6=9 The sum of 1, 2 and 6 is 9

9÷3=3 9 when divided to 3, the quotient is 3
(9 is divisible by 3)

7
The number 126 is divisible by both 2 and 3, therefore, it
is divisible by 6. 126 divided by 6, the quotient is 21.

(b) 1 140

Divisible by 2

1 140 The number is divisible by 2 because the

ones digit of the number is 0.

Divisible by 3

1+1+4+0=6 The sum of all the digits is 6

6÷3=2 6 when divided to 3, the quotient is 2
(6 is divisible by 2)

The number 1 140 is divisible by both 2 and 3, therefore,

it is divisible by 6. 1 140 divided by 6, the quotient is 190.

(c) 62

Divisible by 2

62 The number is divisible by 2 because the

ones digit of the number is 2 which is an
even number.

Divisible by 3

6+2=8 The sum of all the digits of 62 is 8. It is not

divisible by 3.

The number 62 is divisible by 2 but is not divisible by 3.

Therefore, 62 is not divisible by 6.

(d) 141

Divisible by 2

141 The number is not divisible by 2 because

the ones digit is an odd number.

8
Divisible by 3

1+4+1=6
6÷3=2 Divisible by 3

The number 141 is divisible by 3 but is not divisible by 2.

Therefore, it is not divisible by 6.

3. A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of all the digits is divisible or

multiple of 9.

Example:

(a) 234

2+3+4=9 The sum of all the digits is 9

9÷9=1 9 when divided to 9, the quotient is 1

The sum of all the digits of 234 is divisible by 9. Therefore,

234 is divisible by 9. 234 divided by 9, the answer is 26.

(b) 288

2 + 8 + 8 = 18 The sum of all the digits is 18

18 ÷ 9 = 2 18 when divided to 9, the quotient is 2

The sum of all the digits of 288 is divisible by 9. Therefore,

288 is divisible by 9. 288 when divided by 9, the answer is 32

(c) 145

1 + 4 + 5 = 10 The sum of all the digits is 10

The sum of all the digits of 145 which is 10 is not divisible by

9. Therefore, 145 is not divisible by 9.

Note: The divisibility rules for 3, 6 and 9 require finding the sum of
all the digits of a given number.
