Specific  3.4 describe mechanisms of injury, including direct blow, torsion, shearing,
Outcome(s bending and twisting of bones
)

 6.3 recommend fitness and conditioning principles for injury prevention

 6.4 recommend lifestyle choices for injury prevention, including protective
equipment

Learning Students will:

Intentions  Demonstrate their understandings of the anatomy of the knee (remember/understand)
 Identify what the muscles of the quadriceps and hamstrings are (understanding)
 Label upper leg muscles (apply/understand)
 Compare the common injuries to the knee and thigh (understand/apply)
 Describe the preventive/supportive techniques and protective devices for the lower
extremity (understand/apply)

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

anatomical terms o Diagrams
 Students will have o Chromebooks
background knowledge on
the anatomy of the foot and
ankle.
 Students will have gone over

Content/Description Notes/Materials
What do I want my students to learn?
1. What muscles make up the quadricep and hamstring
2. Key concepts from chapter 7 (injuries)
3. Knee/thigh injuries

How will I know my lesson was successful?
1. Students are engaged and asking thought-provoking questions
2. Students can label diagrams
3. Students answer questions correctly

Introduction (5 mins):
Go over the agenda:
 Knee quiz
 Finish Chapter 7 PowerPoint/worksheet
 Go over injuries
 Quad/Ham diagrams

Attention Grabber: Think-pair-share: “What is a hyperextended

knee?”

 Students will think about the question that I wrote on the board,
then discuss it with their desk partner. I will then ask a few
partners to share

“Name 1 step of the hyperextended knee taping”

 Students will do a think-pair-share activity again

“Who can name the 4 ligaments of the knee?”

“Today we are going to start off with a knee quiz. Do you guys
have any questions regarding the knee?”
Knee Quiz
Activity 1: Knee Quiz (20-30mins) depending how long
students take
 I will give students 5 minutes to review the knee before the
quiz
 The quiz is focused on students being able to label a knee
diagram

“When you are done with your quiz, hand it in to be, and you can
grab a Chromebook and finish working on your PowerPoints.
Please be quiet as some of your classmates are still writing.”

Activity 2: Finish Chapter 7 (20mins) Depending on where Chromebooks

students are

o Students will finish their chapter 7 PowerPoint presentations

and send the link to me
o I will pick 4 students to share (random name generator)

“If you are finished if the Chromebook, make sure you sanitize it
and put it away in its correct spot.”

“Grab out your anatomy booklets and open up to your injury

chart.”

Activity 3: Injury PowerPoint (20 mins) Anatomy

 I will go through the remaining knee/thigh injuries booklets
 Students will copy down the information in their injury charts
 There will be probing questions, throughout the PowerPoint, PowerPoint
such as:

o This is a sign or symptom?

o What do you think a mechanism for patella tendonitis
is?
o Why do you think chondromalacia is more common in
female?

“Do you guys have any questions about knee and upper leg
injuries?”

“Now that we have gone over the anatomy of the knee and injuries,
we will move on to looking at the quadricep and hamstring
muscles.” PowerPoint
Activity 4: Quadricep/Hamstring PowerPoint (30mins)
 I will go over the different muscles of the upper leg
 Students will open their booklets to the leg diagram and as a
class we will label them together
 Throughout the PowerPoint there will be labelling questions,
such as:

o What muscle is A?
o What number is the rectus femoris?

Kahoot Quiz
Activity 5: Study time for chapter 7/Kahoot quiz (20 mins)
 Students have a chapter 7 quiz tomorrow, so I will give them
some time to study and review their notes
 After students have looked over their notes, we will play a
chapter 7 Kahoot quiz
 By playing a Kahoot game, students will know what areas they
need to focus on for their test tomorrow
 As students are studying, I will set up the Kahoot game

“Okay everyone, we are now going to play a 10 question Kahoot

game. Pay close attention, some of these questions may be on your
quiz tomorrow. Type in the pin and we will start.”
Anatomy
Booklet
Activity 6: Thigh/Knee Worksheet (30 mins)
 In student’s anatomy booklets, there is a knee/thigh worksheet
 This worksheet focuses on the anterior and posterior view of
the quad, knee and hamstring
 Students will also identify it is the right or left leg that they are
labelling
 This worksheet will act as a study tool for their upcoming knee
unit exam
Conclusion (5 mins):
 Poll everywhere
“Name 2 muscles of the quad or hamstring”

 I will set up a poll everywhere link, and students will text-in

their answers
 This is an excellent formative assessment tool

“Tomorrow there will be a chapter 7 quiz, we will go over

quad/hamstring injuries and do a worksheet”

 Get students to put their work booklets away and push in their
chairs
 Students will wait for the bell to dismiss them.
