RIVERS OF J&K

1)THE INDUS ( SINDH )


• ORIGINATES – Vicinity of Mansarovar Lake from
Tibet
• It is one of the largest rivers of Sub - continent
with total length of about 2880 km out of which
only 709 km length falls in India
• Main tributries – the Jhelum, the Chenab, the Ravi,
The Beas , The satluj
• In kashmir valley, the Indus river is known as Darye
– e- Sindh.
• It is known as Father of Rivers.
2) The Jhelum ( Vitesta ; Vyeth ;
hydaspes)
• Originate from – Chasma verinag Spring at
Anantnag
• Major tributaries – Nallah Lidder , Nallah Sindg ,
Dudhganga River
• Its length in J&K is about 215 km
3. The Chenab (Chandra Bhaga)
• Two river – Chandra and Bhaga meet to
form “ Chandra Bhaga “
• The Chandra Bhaga after flowing through
Chamba in Himachal Pradesh enters J&K at
Padder
• From Padder, this river assumes the name
of Chenab
• Gates of Salal Dam built on Chenab River
• Tributries – The Bhut Nallah and Tawi River

4. The Tawi (Surya Putri)


• Rises from kailash Kund Spring at Soej Hills
in Baderwah
• The tawi river divides Jammu into two parts
– old city and new city.
• It merges with Chenab in Pakistan.
• The length of Tawi river is 141 km.
5. The Neelum River
(Kishanganga )
• Origin - kishanasar Lake
• Length is about 245 km

6) The Ravi ( Iravati ; Purushni)


• Originates from Bara Bhangal in Kangra District of
Himachal Pradesh.
• Ranjit Sagar Dam is built on this river
• Length – 720 km

7) The Zanskar (Janskar or


Jangskar)
• Which frozen river is basically a Chadar Trek ?
Answer – Zanskar River in winter on frozen floor
• Originates from Northeast of Great Himalayas

8) Shyok River
• Originates – Rimo Glacier one of the tongues of
Siachin Glacier
• Known as River of death because it has difficult
Route.
LAKES OF J&K
1)WULAR LAKE (Mahapadmasar)
• Largest freshwater lake in India
• It accounts for about 60% of total fish production
in J&K.
• Situated in Bandipora District.
• Length - 16 km
2) Dal Lake
• 2nd largest in the UT of J&k
• Different names – Lake of flowers , Jewel in the
crown of kashmir , Srinagar’s jewel
3) Mansabal Lake
• Deepest freshwater lake in India.
• Located in Ganderbal District.
• It is famous for Lotus.
• Known as “ Supreme Gems of all kashmiri Lakes”
4) Gangabal lake (Harmukh Ganga)
• Situated in foothills of mount
Harmukh.
5) Kausar Nag
• Known as Vishno Pad
• Lies in Pir Panjal in Kulgam.

6) Mansar Lake (Mansarovar)


• Sacred and Holy Lakes.
• About 60 km away from Jammu.
• Famous temples – Umapati Mahadev and
Narasimha Temples

7)Nigeen Lake
• Located adjacent to Hari Parbat Hillock.
• Known as “ Jewel in the Ring”
