Instructional Plan Equal and Unequal Parts

Title:
Lesson Summary and The lesson being taught introduces the concepts of fractions to students
Focus: through equal and unequal parts. The focus for the lesson will be on
students being able to recognize what equal parts, whether in two or four
pieces, or unequal parts look like. My goal for the lesson is for students to
recognize whether a shape is equally or unequally divided.

Classroom and I have one student with an IEP and they will have the “Learning About
Student Equal and Unequal Shares” worksheet modified along with having the
Factors/Grouping: shapes cut out for the “Equal Parts Sort” worksheet. Students blurting out
is still a problem in the classroom and I will use popsicle sticks along with
rewarding Class Dojo points for those who do not blurt.

National/State CCSS.Math.Content.1.G.A.3: Partition circles and rectangles into two and

Learning Standards: four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths,
and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of.
Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these
examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares
(CCSSI, n.d.).

Specific Learning Students will be able to identify and sort shapes that have equal and
Target(s)/Objectives: unequal parts.

Academic Language  Equal: parts of a shape that are the same

 Unequal: parts of a shape not the same

I will introduce the academic vocabulary during the anticipatory set when
using the anchor chart. I will put each word on the anchor chart and then
provide a definition so the students will know the meaning.

Resources, Materials,  Anchor chart

Equipment, and  Equal/Unequal headings
Technology:  Cut out shapes for anchor chart
 “Learning About Equal and Unequal Shares” worksheet
 Crayons
 “Equal Parts” worksheet
 Shapes half sheet
 Scissors
 Glue
 Elmo for teacher use
 Projector for teacher use
 Laptop for teacher

Section 2: Instructional Planning

Anticipatory Set Time
Needed
 I will create an equal/unequal anchor chart. I will put the words equal and
unequal up on the chart and explain what each word means to the students
10 minutes
before moving on.
 I will give each student a cut out of a shape that has been divided by either
one or two lines. I will call each student up and they will place their shape
under equal or unequal.
Multiple Means of Representation Time
Needed
 I will give students the “Learning About Equal and Unequal Shares”
worksheet.
20 minutes
 I will use popsicle sticks to call on students to tell if a shape is equal or

unequal.
 Students will color equal shapes a color of their choice and will color the
unequal shapes a different color of their choice.

 Students with special needs will be given six problems instead of nine. The
three they will not do will already be marked as equal or unequal.

 Early finishers will not need any additional work as this activity will be done
together.

Multiple Means of Engagement Time

Needed
 I will give students an “Equal Parts Sort” worksheet and a half sheet that has
equal and unequal shapes.
20-30
 Students will cut out the shapes on their own. minutes
 I will use popsicle sticks to call on students and have them choose a shape
and then tell me if we will glue it under equal or unequal. Students will not
be allowed to glue until the answer has been confirmed.

 Students with special needs will have their shapes cut out for them.

 Early finishers will not need any additional work as this activity will be done
together.

Multiple Means of Expression Time

Needed
 There will be three formative assessments in this lesson.
 The first formative assessment will be the anchor chart. Throughout
 The second formative assessment will be the “Learning About Equal and lesson
Unequal Shares” worksheet.
 The third formative assessment will be the “Equal Parts Sort” worksheet.
