Horizontal liquid vapour separator without demister pad

Liquid density, ρL kg/m3 = 962 kg/m3

Vapour density, ρv kg/m3 = 23.6 kg/m3
Vapour mass flow, m kg/h = 12500 kg/h
Liquid mass flow, kg/s = 10000 kg/h
Hold-up required in vessel = 10 min

Settling velicity, ut = 0.441404 m/s

settling vlocity of droplets = 0.066211 m/s

Vapour volumetric flowrate, Q = 0.147128 m3/s

Take
hv = 0.5 Dv
Lv/Dv = 4

2
Cross sectional area for vapour flow = 0.392699 *Dv
-2
vapour velocity, uv = 0.374659 *Dv
Vapour resindence time required for = 7.551665 *Dv
3
the droplets to settle to liquid surface = 10.67639 Dv

For satisfactory separation

required residance time must be equal to actual residane time

minimum vessel dia = 0.841026 m

Round off to the standard pipe size = 0.92 m (nearest standard pipe size)

Liquid hold up time

Liquid volumetric flowrate = 0.002888 m3/s

Liquid c/s area = 0.332381 m2
Length = 3.68 m
Hold-up volume = 1.22316 m3
hold-up time = 423.6049 sec
= 7.060081 min

This much hold-up is not sufficient

So increase the diameter by a factor = 1.190132
Dv = 1.094922 m
New liquid hold-up volume = 2.061906 m3
New residance time = 714.0792 sec
= 11.90132 min
Lv = 4.379686 m
Key points
1 The diameter and length and the liquid level must be chosen to give sufficient
vapour residence time for liquid droplets to settle out and for required liquid
hold-up to be met.
2 The most economical length to diameter ratio will depend on operating pressure.
As a general guidethe following values should be used.
Operating pressure Length:Diameter Lv/Dv
0-20 bar 3
20-35 bar 4
>35 bar 5
3 For priliminary designs, set the liquid height at half the vessel diameter.
hv = Dv/2 and fv = 0.5
where fv = fraction of fraction of total c/s area occupied by the vapour.
hv = liquid height
