SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ALONG BADOC RIVER IN BADOC,

ILOCOS NORTE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Environmental degradation is one of the problems that the Earth is facing for these days.
People use the environment for their needs, whether for business or for livings. Environment is
the first place where people can obtain their basic needs. So we have to protect our environment
before it’s too late.
One way of protecting the environment is the solid waste management. It is a
responsibility of the local government. The management of solid waste is used to refer to the
collection process rather than being disposed of anywhere. Recycling is a unique way of utilizing
garbage that can be useful. Regarding the challenges face by managing solid waste in cities and
due respect that cities and towns grow and generate more solid waste, the environmental impact
of solid waste gradually remain in existence.
Badoc is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Ilocos Norte, Philippines. According
to the latest census, it has a population of 30,063 people in 5,879 households. Badoc River is a
stream within Ilocos Norte and is nearby to Apatut, Parmig and Lingsat. Thus, this study will be
conducted on the practice on solid waste management along Badoc river at Badoc, Ilocos Norte.
As the Badoc grow in number and widen in geographical and population, solid waste rapidly
emerges as an important environmental management issue. Even though there are established
legal structure for solid waste management, there is still a need for examining laws and practice
on solid waste management. (John Michael Marere)
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objectives of this study are:

1. To study the characteristics of solid waste management practices along Badoc river.
2. To establish an understanding of the perception among local communities about solid waste
management for sound environmental development
3. To investigate the environmental impacts of solid waste management practices in Badoc River
4. To assess how improved waste management practices can contribute to sustain the
development processes along Badoc River.

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

This study is important because it provides knowledge not only to understand the laws and
practices governing solid waste product but to improve more of the matter. This study helps to make a
better strategy for maintaining solid waste management.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF STUDY

This study will be conducted along Badoc river at Badoc, Ilocos Norte to answer the following
questions: 1. How people manage their waste? 2. Where do people put their waste? 3. Who obey and
disobey their law or practice for waste management?
More information will be obtained from different individuals related to the study.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Environmental degradation - a process through which the natural environment is compromised

in some way, reducing biological diversity and the general health of the environment. This
process can be entirely natural in origin, or it can be accelerated or caused by human activities.
Biological diversity - the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter
alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they
are a part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.
Solid waste - any garbage, refuse, sludge from a wastewater treatment plant, water supply
treatment plant, or air pollution control facility and other discarded materials including solid,
liquid, semi-solid, or contained gaseous material, resulting from industrial, commercial, mining
and agricultural operations, and from community activities.
Solid waste management - a term that is used to refer to the process of collecting and
treating solid wastes. It also offers solutions for recycling items that do not belong to garbage or
trash. As long as people have been living in settlements and residential areas, garbage or solid
waste has been an issue.

RELATED LITERATURE

Rivers, a flowing, moving stream of water that usually feeds water into an ocean, lake, pond, or
even another river is very useful to the world. It provide a source of drinking water, for obtaining food, to
fertilize lands and way to transport goods from place to place. Rivers and surroundings land drained by
them are very important wildlife habitats. The water itself provides the environment for fish plants and
animals, while the banks nearby support creatures such dragonflies and a variety of water plants. Most
settlements were built along rivers. It is important for farming because river valleys and plains provide
fertile soils. Farmers in dry regions irrigate their cropland using water carried by irrigation channel from
nearby rivers. Likewise, this body of water is an important energy source. During the early industrial era,
mils, shops, and factories were built near fast-flowing rivers where water could be used to power
machines. Today steep rivers are still use to power hydroelectric plants and their water turbines.

Solid waste management

The term solid waste is used to include all non-liquid wastes generated by human activity and a scope
of solid waste material resulting from the disaster, such as general internal garbage such as food waste,
ash and packaging materials, human feces disposed of in garbage, emergency waste like as plastic water
bottles and packaging from other emergency supplies, fallen trees and rocks blocking transport and
communications. Other wastes, like medical waste from hospitals and toxic waste from industry, will also
need to be distribute with instant, but they are not covered by this kind of note (World Health
Organization, 2011).

3R’s (Reduce Reuse Recycle)

Three layer approach for managing solid waste has determined by the Environmental Protection
Agency. Each of these should be practiced to reduce the amount material headed for final disposal. They
are in order of importance like reduce, the best way to manage solid waste. Don't create waste in the first
place! Buy only what you need. Use all that you buy. Avoid heavily packaged products. Avoid disposable
items like paper plates and plastic knives, fork and spoon. Buy the largest size package for those items
that you use are often. Reuse, the better way to manage solid waste. Reuse items use them over and over
until they are completely damaged. Recycle, the good way to manage solid waste. Recycle means taking
something old and making it into something new. In some country, all residents who live in a single
family home can recycle right in front of their house. Those residents who live in apartments can drop off
their recyclables at several different locations. Old newspapers, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars,
aluminum and steel cans can all be recycled by simply rinsing out containers and removing the cover. Not
only does it keep items out of the landfill, recycling conserves natural resources (Seminole County
Government, 2012)

DISPOSAL

In a country, there are many strict regulations governing the treatment and disposal of waste and in
most other countries as well. In waste transfer and treatment require licenses to those facilitators that
involved, and all personnel who work at such facilities require the proper kind of training that goes with
the handling of waste that can be dangerous if not handled properly. Waste management facilities also
need to be able to respond to emergency situations. By their very nature there is any warning that an
emergency is about to occur. For that reason emergency response teams need to be on standby every hour
of every day, and every day of every year. Waste management disposal and treatment can originate from
both internal and industrial sources (Rose, 2009).

Health Impacts of Solid Wastes

Modernization and progress have had its share of disadvantages. One of the main asoects of
concern is the pollution it is causing to the earth be it land, air, and water. With an increase in the global
population and rising demand for food and other essentials, there has been a rise in the amount of waste
being generated daily by each household. This waste is ultimately thrown into municipal waste collection
center from where it is collected by the area municipalities to be further thrown into landfills and dumps.
However, either due to resource insufficient infrastructure, not all of these wastes get collected and
transported to the final dumpsites. If at this stage, the management and disposal are improperly done, they
can serious impact to health and problems to the surrounding. (Ramboll Environ, Inc.)
Methodology
Locale of study
This study will focuses only on all individuals living near the Badoc River, they will be
investigated or they will be evaluated based on what solid waste management characteristics or practices
that can contribute to sustain the development processes along Badoc River.

Data instrument
A questionnaire requires a survey to perform data collection by providing a personal interview
question that each individual will answer. The questions should be easy to understand and easy to answer
each question properly.

Research Design
All data collected will be analyzed using the survey. It will use the discovery of the level and
characteristics of respondents in the said area in terms of disposal and waste management practices.

Statistical Analysis
The data will be reviewed with the purpose of answering the questions. The analysis will take one
step, not necessarily starting with the most important question. T-test will be made to determine whether
there is a difference in solid waste management practices along rivers in daily habits in any part of
society.
