Question#01

Why use nautical mile?

This unit was first use by ships in sea. They use a rope with knots at equal distance and throw the
rope from board to sea. In this manner they measure their speed. In aviation we concern with
distance in latitude and longitude on the earth. The latitude and longitude are pointed on the
surface of earth which show the exact location of an aircraft in the earth orbit. In actual a NM is
equal to 1/60 of latitude across the line of longitude. Now a day it is equal to 1.852 km which is
equal to 1.15 mile of distance.

1/60th of one degree:

The circumference of earth divided in to 3600 with reference line across equators. In one degree
of earth circumference there is 60 minutes and one-minute show one nautical mile.

Significance of Nautical Mile:

As an aircraft deals with the air and there is no land and they enquire their distance across
latitude and longitude of earth. The nautical mile is 1/60 of latitude of total 360 0 of circumference
of earth across the line of longitude.

Measuring Distance Meridian Lines:

Longitude is measured by imaginary lines that run around the Earth vertically and meet at the
North and South Poles. These lines are known as meridians. Each meridian measures one arc
degree of longitude. These lines always run parallel to each other, and hence, they are always an
equal distance apart and never cross these lines. The latitude of a particular location is the
distance, measured in degrees, between that place and the equator along a meridian, or line of
longitude. The equator is 00 latitude, and the North and South Poles are located at 90 0 north and
900 south latitude respectively. In other words, values for latitude range from a minimum of 0 0 to
a maximum of 900.
