Family Resources Management


I. Background Information:
Home management is part of family life. It is about managing family resources.
Parents are not the only one responsible for managing the home. Everyone must be
aware of their duties and roles in this endeavor.
Family resources include anything tangible that helps provide for the needs of its
members. Like any other resources, these are limited, and family members need to
work to sustain them.
Type of Family Resources
Human Resources
 Every able-bodied member of the family is considered an important human
resource. People who can contribute their time, effort, talents, skills, and expertise
is considered part of the family’s human resources.
 Capabilities, Intelligence, and Skills
Every person has his or her unique ability and intelligence. It is important to utilize
these capabilities in such a way that one improves not only himself but also others.
 Strength
The strength of a person is not only about good health. It is also about having a
strong commitment and positive outlook in life, especially towards work and during
times of crisis. Strength must be utilized to accomplish task on time so one can
play and relax with the family.
Material Resources
 Tangible assets such as house and lot, furniture and appliances, jewelries,
automobiles, and cash.
Non-material Resources
 Time
Time is very important. This is the resources that cultivates cooperation,
fulfilment of the prescribed duties, and smart and smart maintenance of home
Everyone needs ample time to accomplish his or her day-to-day duties and
responsibilities.
 Health
Health is wealth. Health is important to all family members to do their duties
without delay.
 Experience
Work experience is an important asset of family members, the more experience
the more likely he or she will get hired and get higher salary.
Budgeting
It is important to set the family’s goals and priorities, and budget available resources.
For example, if education is the priority, the bigger portion of the budget should be
allocated to these. It is very important to revisit goals and priorities so often as these
change over time. Members of the family should help to stick to the budget and avoid
overspending. Children should know also to spend their allowances according to their
needs. As much as possible save water, energy and other items that cost money.
Steps in Effective Home Management
1. Planning – Set goals. This is the basis for planning activities.
2. Organizing – Involves division and delegation of works among family
members.
3. Implementing- Refers to the process of executing the plans and performing
the task given to each member.
4. Evaluating –Assessing and analyzing the result whether successful or failure
so that adjustment can be made.
Factors to be considered in Budgeting
1. Size of the family, 2. Family Income, 3. Kind of work of family member, 4. Talent
and abilities of every individual, 5. Where the family lives
Components or Elements of family Budget
1. Food- groceries, raw and cooked food, staples, condiments and spice
2. Shelter- if not renting includes taxes, repair and maintenance
3. Clothing – uniforms, clothes and accessories
4. Education- tuition fees, books, daily foods, transportation allowance, of the
children
5. Household operation-things needed in the house, beddings, curtains, furniture,
and others to make the family comfortable
6. Utilities- electricity, water, and telephone bills, gas, salaries of helper
7. Health, medicine check up
8. Recreation- family outings, outside dining, watching movies
9. Savings- the amount set aside or deposited in the bank
