PLOT ELEMENTS

What is plot?
✗ A plot is what happens in the story.

✗ A plot is not a simple sequence of events it is an


interruption of a pattern, a turning point or an action.

Example of a plot
Kaitlin wants to buy a puppy. She goes to the pound
and begins looking through the cages for her future
pet. At the end of the hallway, she sees a small, sweet
brown dog with a white spot on its nose. At that
instant, she knows she wants to adopt him. After she
receives shots and a medical check, she and the dog,
Berkley, go home together.

Exposition
✗ It is the beginning of the story where the main character or
characters, understanding the setting, and deduce the
conflict are being introduced.

EXAMPLE:
Introduces us to Kaitlin and her conflict. She wants
a puppy but does not have one.

Rising action
✗ It is the section of the plot leading up to the
climax.

EXAMPLE:
She enters the pound and begins looking.

Climax
✗ It is the peak of action.
✗ The main character confront the action or conflict and now
something major has to come to a head.

EXAMPLE:
When she sees the dog of her dreams and
decides to adopt him.

Falling action
✗ It is the section of the plot following the climax in which
the tension stemming from the story’s central conflict
decreses and the story moves forward its conclusion.

EXAMPLE:
She gave a quick medical check.

Resolution
✗ It is at the end of the story.
✗ It occurs after the climax.
✗ It is when you learn what happens to the
characters after the conflict is resolved.

EXAMPLE:
Kaitlin and the dog Berkey happily head
home.
