maximum bending stress in the beam.

Q2/ The wood beam has a rectangular cross section in the proportion shown. Determine its
required dimension b if the allowable bending stress is 10 MPa.

Ans: b =53.1mm

Q3/ Knowing that the allowable stress for the steel used is 160 MPa, select the most
economical wide-flange beam to support the loading shown.
