1. Background

Nurses often have different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds with clients.
It is important for nurses to understand that the client has an insight into the views
and interpretations of different illnesses and health, based on the client's social-
cultural and religious beliefs. If awareness about and sensitivity of the client to the
uniqueness and practice of health and disease delivered to the nurse, then

effective nursing care.

beliefs have their roots in the cultural, ethnic, religious, and social backgrounds of
individuals, families, or communities. When anticipating or experiencing a disease or
crisis, individuals may use modern and traditional approaches to prevention and
cure, or may use both. The following questions should be asked in respect of the
nurse's and client's cultural background.

1. Who are nurses viewed from a cultural perspective? Who are clients viewed from a
cultural perspective?
2. What is the nurse's cultural heritage? What is the client's cultural heritage?
3. What is the health tradition of the nurse's cultural heritage? What is the health
tradition of the client's cultural heritage?
4. What are the cultural phenomena that interact with the nurse's health care needs?
What are the cultural phenomena that interact with clients' health care needs?

The answer to this question will help nurses successfully provide care for clients
from different cultural or ethnic backgrounds. Effective transcultural relationships and
communications. Transcultural relationships and communications occur when each
individual seeks to understand another's perspective from the reference of a person's
cultural framework. Effective transcultural communication is facilitated by the
identification of common areas. After achieving a cultural understanding, the nurse
must consider the cultural factors of the client throughout the nursing process. In the
last decade, nursing organizations have emphasized the importance of considering
cultural factors when providing nursing care. The subspecialty of transcultural nursing
shows an attempt by nurses from all cultural backgrounds and clinical fields to join
and identify concepts that enable them to develop the knowledge and skills required
to deliver culturally sensitive nurses.
