Bless Me Ultima Autobiographical Setting

Essential Question: How does an individual find their own

identity in a world of contradictions?

Bless Me Ultima, written by Rudolfo Anaya, is autobiographical in nature, and

takes place in New Mexico. Anaya uses the town and surrounding area where he grew
up for the setting of the story, which examines the life of the young protagonist, Antonio
Marez. In the story, Anaya focuses on three landscapes; the plains of Las Pasturas,
(llano); the fields and farms of El Puerto; and the town of Guadalupe, to explore the
internal and external conflict that Antonio must experience to find his own identity.
