Why study mythology?


⮚ it
shows how the human race thought and felt in
the previous times;
⮚ retracethe path from civilized man who lives so
far from nature, to man who lived in close
companionship with nature; and
⮚ itlead us back to the time when the world was
young and people had a connection with the
earth and seas and flowers and hills;
THE GODS

Olympians) THE TITANS/ ELDER GODS
CRONUS/ SATURN – father of ZEUS
OCEAN – the river that was supposed to encircle the earth
TETHYS – wife of OCEAN
HYPERION – the father of the sun, the moon and the dawn
MNEMOSYNE – meaning memory
THEMIS – translated as justice
IAPETUS – important because of his sons ATLAS and
PROMETHEUS
ATLAS – bore the world on his shoulders
PROMETHEUS – the saviour of mankind
THE TWELVE OLYMPIANS
ZEUS/ JUPITER – the Lord of the Sky. The Rain-god and the Cloud-gatherer
HERA/ JUNO – Zeus’s wife and sister, protector of marriage, cow and peacock were sacred to
her and Argos was her favorite city

POSEIDON/ NEPTUNE – the ruler of the sea, the Earth-shaker


HADES/ PLUTO – the God of Wealth, King of the Dead
PALLAS ATHENA/ MINERVA – daughter of Zeus alone, she sprang of his head, the Goddess of
the City, one of the three virgin goddesses, also called the Goddess of Wisdom, her special city is
Athens, her tree was olive and her bird was owl

PHOEBUS APOLLO – the master musician, god of light, also the god of truth
ARTEMIS/ DIANA – lady of the wild things, she was a huntress, all wild animals was sacred
to her especially the deer, one of the three virgin goddesses

APHRODITE/VENUS – goddess of love and beauty


HERMES/ MERCURY – the master thief, messenger of the gods
ARES/ MARS – the god of war
HEPHAESTUS/ VULCAN AND MULCIBER – the god of fire
HESTIA/ VESTA – the goddess of the hearth, the symbol of home, of the three virgin goddesses
