The Government has taken several initiatives for regulating mining activities.

1. Mineral policies
2. Minor mineral concession rules
3. Environmental impact assessment study
4. New mining leases

MEASURES:

1. Proper restoration of the area should be carried out.

2. The top soil where ever extracted should be used immediately and where ever can’t be
used should be stacked separately to be used later for rehabilitating mined out areas
and dumps.
3. As far as possible, back filling and land reclamation work should be carried on
concurrently with mining,
4. Vacant land in mine lease hold should be utilised for tree plantation.
5. If the mining project involves involuntary displacement of people, a proper
resettlement and rehabilitation scheme should be prepared.
6. Cleaner production alternatives like:-
 Surface mining technologies
 Biodegradation
 Chemical de-toxification method should be provided.
7. Monitoring of various environmental parameters should be carried out not only for
individual but also for cluster of mines.
8. Renewal of lease should not be considered unless the rehabilitation has taken place.
9. Blanket ban on mining in Western Ghats
10. Involve tribals in forest areas to tackle smuggle of forest resources
11. Recruit youths of Naxal areas in Forest Dept
12. Strong public strand:
 Youths should take initiative like formation of awareness clubs.
 Awareness should be created among the regional people like tribal people.
 Taking effective actions.

Western Ghats: Heaven on earth

If the mining processes are continued without any precautions, then western ghats will
lose its rich natural as well cultural heritage. Mining activities will cause tremendous
loss of biodiversity and natural resources. If immediate actions are not taken against
these activities then there will be great depletion of the natural resources. So to
prevent our mother earth and for its sustainability a combined efforts of the
government and people is necessary. Awareness among people will not only prevent
further destruction of environment but also will help to recover the wounds of the
mother earth.

The bottomline is that striking a balance between conservation(protecting

environment and rights of indigenious people) and meeting the resource needs of a
developing economy has to be achieved in future.
