“Now that you already has the idea about Sound

let’s talk about its characteristics.”

II. ABSTRACTION

What is sound? Sound is a form of energy that

travels in invisible waves
created by vibrating objects. It
cannot travel in vacuum.

Production of Sound:
The source of sound is any vibrating object.
The vibration of the vocal chords in the larynx
produces human voice and also animals.

The Audible Range:

The audible range of frequency for humans is
from 20 – 20,000 Hz.

What is infrasound? Sounds whose frequencies

are lower than 20 Hz.

Sources of infrasonic:
Natural events: avalanches, earthquakes,
volcanoes, waterfalls, calving of icebergs,
meteors, and lightning (source:

Animal communication: whales, elephants,

hippopotamuses, rhinoceros, giraffes,
alligators
Sounds with frequencies

They are used by some animals like bats

(echolocation), insects, dogs, cats, and
dolphins.
Imaging is the most common use of
ultrasound in medicine.

Characteristics of Sound: Pitch refers to the highness

What is pitch? and lowness of a sound.

According to the basic wave equation, a high-

frequency sound gives rise to a short wave
and a low-frequency sound, to a long wave.
Loudness refers to the

Pitch, loudness, and quality.

TEST II-EXPLAINATION
(5 Points)
1. Explain comprehensively what is
sound and how it is produced. Students will perform the
experiment, make a Vlog, and
IV. ASSIGNMENT submit on the Facebook page.
Instruction: Make a Vlog about science
experiment. Perform “Musical Jars
Science Experiment” at home using Set of
Glasses of equal shape and size, water,
metal spoon, Food coloring (Optional).
Investigate the sound waves, pitch, and
more as you create your own musical
instrument. During video demonstration,
explain how the experiment works, the
materials needed and some information
about sound. Then submitted your vlog on
our Facebook page.

I will give you a sheet that includes the

materials needed, and the steps of the
Musical jar Science Experiment.

MATERIALS:
 Set of glasses of equal shape and
size
 Water
 Metal spoon

Questions:
What do you observe?
Do they sound the same?
2. Pour water into each jar. Make
sure that the water level is different
in each jar.
3. Add food coloring to each jar to
make it easier to see the different
water levels. You can use different
colors in each jar.
4. Use the same metal spoon to tap
on the jars again. Listen carefully
so you can hear how the sounds
have changed.
Questions:
What is the reason why the jars “None ma’am.”
make a different sound?
