Section Four: Alignment to Curriculum & Professional Standards

Introduction

Introduction

In this section, I will be letting you know all of the artifacts that I included in this

portfolio and their standards that go along with them. These specific standards that I have chosen

go along with the artifacts for my portfolio. It will prove that I have the right standards for NYS

and for any other subject that is included. The standards are also there to show you I have been

able to follow the correct guidelines for the specific lesson plans, math lessons, ELA papers and

so forth. The most important thing is that we connect to the students on an intellectual level and

not just a common core standards level. This section will prove how I value the standards by

linking them to. Individuals often perceive standards as the curriculum or course of study in a

particular subject. Rather, standards inform educators about what the outcomes of a course of

study should be. Common Core and other state college and career readiness standards define the

skills and knowledge that students must obtain to be prepared for college, work and life;

standards also guide the goals that educators must work toward. Standards also form instruction.

Standards are what curriculum, assessments and professional development are designed to

support and achieve. At Apex Learning, curriculum development starts with standards. This part

of the portfolio will also who you how standards measure achievement. This describes the basic

idea of Common Core and other state college and career readiness standards. These form a

common set of goals that can be measured within a state or across the country to determine

student success.  Curriculum is really important because having regular discussions about

curriculum creates opportunities to get all stakeholders involved: teachers, administration,

parents and communities. Getting input from everyone will help identify where you’re strong
and what gaps you need to address. It also gives teachers a platform over which they can share

best practices, knowledge and resources with each other.

INTASC Standards: Learner and the Learning

This standard relates to artifact one because I have students who need the extra assistance

in class and some students who have IEP’s. The standard clearly states that the teacher uses

understanding of individuals differences. The student with the 504 plans will require extended

time to complete the assignment, and be provided with nonverbal and verbal cues in redirecting

attention to the task at hand. If there is a student who needs extra help or time on a certain test,

we will be able to accommodate them for those certain circumstances. Our job as educators is to

make sure every student has the equal opportunity for an education. The artifacts that I have

chosen that go along with these standards are as follows:

1. Math Lesson plan

2. Classroom Management

3. Culturally responsive teaching

The standards that I have listed above go along with the INTASC because knowledge of

learners consists of different elements namely the empirical and cognitive knowledge of learners.

From this kind of knowledge come the skills and processes of adaptation activities and

representations to the needs of particular learners; in other words of differentiation for differing

abilities.

The New York State Code of Ethics for Educators

The NYSCEE is a clear set of expectation and certain principals that we as educators’

practice in the classroom and keeping academic excellence. There are a common set of standards
held by educators like ourselves and will be able to assist in professional reflection as this code

speaks to the core value of professional educators. Each of the artifacts that I have listed below

model the code of conduct. Teachers must model strong character traits, such as perseverance,

honesty, respect, lawfulness, patience, fairness, responsibility and unity. As a teacher, you must

treat every student with kindness, equality and respect, without showing favoritism, prejudice or

partiality. The artifacts that are related to the NYS code of ethics are as follows:

1. Intersections of gender

2. Technology in Education

3. Virtual Classroom

These three standards go along with the code of NYS code of ethics because The Importance of

Teacher Ethics. The code of ethics for teachers is designed to protect the rights of the students,

all the students, which is important that teachers understand that when they get

a teaching position they are agreeing to follow the code of ethics

P-12 NYS Common Core Learning Standards

The New York State Common Core Learning Standards for ELA, Math, and Social Studies show

certain expectations that must be upheld by the teachers and the students. The standards of the

NYS common core are used to help the students enhance their knowledge for future colleges or

jobs. NYS common core standards were also developed so teachers could teach the same lessons

across the board. It will be ideal to have the same kids on the same topics and don’t have any

other school learn something different. High standards that are consistent across states provide

teachers, parents, and students with a set of clear expectations to ensure that all students

have the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life upon graduation
from high school, regardless of where they live. The artifacts that I have selected that go along

with the P-12 common core are:

1. Math lesson plan

2. Literature Portfolio

3. Theorist Paper

4. Classroom Management

Today, Common Core is well established across classrooms in the US and many

educators in all schools say it has indeed transformed the way they teach and given

students the critical thinking skills they need for the modern world. The Common

Core began, in part, to help the students understand the material and really think deeper

of what they are trying to learn. The sweeping federal mandate that required all schools to

test students annually in reading and math, in the third through eighth grades and once in

high school. The law was largely seen as a disappointment.

International Society for Technology Education for Teachers and Students

(ISTE)

The standards for ISTE are for educators in the schools, which are designed to help us define

new skills for the students in the classroom. The ISTE Standards for Students are designed to

empower student voice and ensure that learning is a student-driven process that they are trying to

achieve or goals that they set. Connect with other educators in the ISTE Standards Community

and learn how to use the standards in the classroom with the ISTE Standards for Students eBook.

Dive into the standards. The standards spell out what students are expected to learn in each grade

and each subject. These standards become the basis for the way teachers are trained, what they
teach and what is on state standardized tests that students take. The artifacts that I have selected

that match the standards of ISTE are:

1. Intersections of gender

2. Theorist Paper

3. Classroom Management

4. Technology in education

The standards that I have selected go along with the ISTE because Having this type of

experience and introducing us to what it will be like, will really help me and other students going

for education in the future. Google classroom is great because it is free for anyone who makes a

Gmail account, which is beneficial for students who come from a low-income family. It keeps

the class organized and lets the kids know when everything is due, so that they do not miss an

assignment. The parents can also keep updated on the announcements and important dates in the

upcoming academic year.

Council for Exceptional Children (ECE)

The council of exceptional children have been advocates for appropriate governmental policies,

sets professional standards, provides professional development, and helps professionals obtain

conditions and resources necessary for effective professional practice. Making sure that there

will be certain times when we are in school or in the classroom and we need to maintain that

state of professionalism while talking to a parent or administrator. No matter how frustrated you

are, there is a time and a place where you can vent and understand the issue. The artifacts that I

have selected to go along with these standards are:

1. Math Lesson Plan

2. Culturally responsive teaching

DOE Claims 1-3 : Division of Education Claims &  CAEP (Council for

Accreditation for Educator Preparation)

The DOE or CAEP is the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. CAEP is

responsible for the oversight on accredited programs, and ensures the proper teaching standards

are fully implemented for its accredited programs. CAEP accreditation is widely considered as

the top teaching program-specific accreditation. The artifacts that I have chosen that match these

standards are:

1. Classroom Management

2. Technology in education

Conclusion

Without standards, districts and schools don’t have goals to shoot for. By matching

what is taught in the classroom to the standards in each subject area, students will know

what teachers should be teaching, what students should be learning and what they will be

tested on. For having standards, it keeps the schools staying on task and making sure that all

the students have an equal opportunity for an education. All the children need is structure

and a solid game plan when they are following certain parts in the school district. There are

standards to keep us on the straight and narrow path.
