KNOCKING-OUT BUNKERS BATTLE DRILL
DEFINITION:
Battle drill is defined as a collective
action rapidly executed without
applying a deliberate decision-making
process

BACK
SQUAD BATTLE DRILL:
Battle drill describe how platoons and squads apply
fire and maneuver to situations that they may
commonly encounter in the battlefield . These drills
require leaders to make decisions rapidly; and
issue brief oral orders quickly .
CHARACTERISTICS:

 Require minimal leader orders to accomplish a

battle task that is standard throughout the
Army.
 Sequential actions vital to success in combat or
critical to preserving life.
 Applicable to platoon or smaller units.
 Trained responses to enemy actions or leader's
orders.
 Represent mental steps followed for offensive
and defensive actions in training and combat.

BACK
MPORTANCE OF BATTLE DRILL
A. Identify the key actions that the squad leader and
soldier must perform quickly.
B. Provide for a smooth transition from activity to
another: for example, from movement to
offensive action to defensive action.
C. Provide standardized action that link individual
collective task with the squad.
D. Require the full understanding of each individual
and leader, and continual practice.

KNOCKING-OUT BUNKERS BATTLE DRILL

SITUATION: A squad receives fires from enemy
individual or crew-serve weapons.
a. Soldiers immediately take the nearest
covered position and return fire in the
direction of contact.

the mission.
Squad Attack Battle Drill

SITUATION: The squad is moving as part

of the platoon conducting a hasty or
deliberate attack; or is moving with the
platoon conducting a movement-to-
contact.

BACK
React to Ambush Battle Drill
SITUATION: If the squad enters a kill
zone and the enemy initiates an ambush
with a casualty-producing device and a
high volume of fire, the unit takes the
following actions.
 NEAR AMBUSH
 FAR AMBUSH

BACK
React to ambush.
movement

ENEMY IS FAR

In a near ambush (within hand-

grenade range), soldiers
receiving fire immediately
return fire, take up covered
positions, and throw
fragmentation, concussion,
and smoke grenades

In a far ambush (beyond hand-

grenade range), soldiers
receiving fire immediately
return fire, take up covered
positions, and suppress
the enemy

BACK
Near Ambush.

In a near ambush (within hand-

grenade range), soldiers
receiving fire immediately return
fire, take up covered positions,
and throw fragmentation,

BACK
Near Ambush.

a. Immediately after the grenades detonate,

soldiers in kill zone move out of the zone
(six).

a. Soldiers not in the zone act as covering fire

until the team in the kill zone are out of the
zone.

BACK
Near Ambush.

c. The first team out of the zone after taking up

new position gives cover fire in order for the
others to extricate.

d. When the whole squad has been extricated

from the ambush, as the SL may direct, the
squad proceeds with sqd attack of break
contact

BACK
Reminders

1. Locate enemy positions.

2. Initiate immediate suppressive fires against the
enemy.
3. Take up covered positions.
4. Shift fires as the assault begins.
Far Ambush

In a far ambush (beyond hand-grenade

range), soldiers receiving fire
immediately return fire, take up covered
positions, and suppress the enemy

BACK
Far Ambush

detonate, use proper fire and maneuver
teams move out of their current positions

Knocking-out Bunkers Battle Drill

SITUATION: The squad identifies enemy in

bunkers while conducting operations as
part of platoon operations.
REQUIRED ACTIONS:
a. The squad initiates contact. The squad
leader moves to the fire team leader .
1. The fire team in contact provides
suppressive fires and obscures enemy
position with smoke (M203).

2. The squad leader determines

whether he can maneuver by
identifying -
a. Enemy bunkers, other supporting
position, and any obstacle.
b. Size of the enemy force engaging
the squad (the number of enemy
automatic weapons and enemy
strength.)
c. Vulnerable flank of at least one
bunker.
d. Covered and concealed flanking
route to the flank of the bunker.
b. If the bunker to be assaulted is determined,
the squad leader moves the assaulting team along
the covered and concealed route to the flank of the
bunker.
1. The assaulting team approaches the
bunker from its blind side and does not
mask the fire of the base-of-fire
element.
2. Soldiers constantly watch out for other
bunkers of enemy position in support of it.
c. Upon reaching the last covered and
concealed position-
1. The team leader and the automatic
rifle remain in place and add their fires
to suppress the bunker.
2.The squad leader positions from where
he can best control his teams
3. The grenadier and rifleman continue
forward to the blind side of the bunker. One
soldier takes up a covered position near the
exit, while one soldier cooks off (two second
maximum) a grenade, shouts ”Grenade” and
throws it through an aperture.

4. After the grenade detonates, the soldier

covering the exit enters the bunker, firing
short bursts to destroy the enemy. The
soldier who throws the grenade should not
be the first one to the clear the bunker.
d. The squad leader inspects the bunker to
ensure that it has been destroyed. He reports,
reorganizes as needed, and continues the mission.
