“Urbanisation has brought harm to the society”. Do you agree?

In this era of globalisation, our country has evolved in every aspects especially in
technologies and economics. The creation of robots and various type of tools invented by people has
proved that Malaysia is moving towards better development. For this reason, many people from
rural areas decide to move to cities, or the situation known as urbanisation. Urbanisation can be
refer as the movement of a group of people from rural areas to cities. There are several factors that
contributes to urbanisation. People migrates from one place to another place to search for a job
opportunity and have a better living standard including better access in facilities, educations,
medications and so on. Despite of all of these advantages, there are a big drawback of urbanisation.
Therefore, in my humble opinion, I strongly believe that urbanisation can bring harm to society as it
increase the competition among people in getting job, caused a lot of pollution and lead to crimes.

First and foremost, urbanisation can create high competition in various aspects especially in
getting a job to earn a living. This is because when a lot of people from rural areas move to the cities,
the population in the cities rise up. Therefore, the working opportunity become less due to
increasing number of people at one time. Not all of the people will get chances to work in the cities
as most of the companies or working places have put a limit of their workers and decide to not hire
more workers anymore. The demand for job is greater than the job available. So, in order to get the
job, they have to compete between one another and increase their skills such as communication
skills, computer skills and interpersonal skills . This is because the most of the employers want a staff
who can be a multi-tasking person as this kind of personality can bring a great benefit to their
companies. However, due to high competition in working chances, there will be a group of
individuals who lose in getting the job and end up in poverty. In sum, urbanisation makes people
harder to get a job and increase the percentage of unemployment.

Other than that, the second disadvantages of urbanisation is pollution. One type of pollution
occur is air pollution. High number of people will increased the number of vehicles and
transportation on the road. As a consequences, the air will be polluted with smokes from the
engines of vehicles and the carbon monoxide in the smokes will be trapped in our atmosphere. This
situation may bring a negative impact towards health. Carbon monoxide which trapped in the air
reduces the amount of oxygen. Then, the large amount of carbon monoxide will generate haze and
increase the risk of getting cataract. Besides, overcrowding of people will cut the supply of clean
water. In addition, as more of people move to cities, more buildings and factories are built. The
discharge of toxic wastes from factories to the river will reduces our sources of clean water. This
situation become worse when there are some of people simply consume unfiltered water from river
or sea as they cannot afford to have a better supply of water at home. Consumption of unhealthy
water from river can cause diseases like cholera, food poisoning and diarrhoea because it contains
massive amount of chemicals from the toxic substances. Clearly, this is leading to the spread of
disease and poor health in heavily populated areas.

Last but not least, high population in one place may lead to crimes. Considering the vast
amount of unemployed people in cities, there are a huge opportunity for an individuals to commit in
crime as they will do anything to get money or any valuable things to feed themselves or their
families. The cost of living in cities is higher than cost of living in rural areas, so in order to survive,
they have to gain money even though in a wrong and unethical way. Illustrative examples are
parents who sell their children to paedophiles or a father who resorts to robbery just so he could
buy medicine for his sick son. Furthermore, due to poverty, people will easily get depressed or
stressed when thinking on how to survive in a high cost of living with no sources of money. Then,
they sometimes choose the wrong way to forget their problem by taking drug for example. This
situation become worse if they behave in aggressive behaviour towards people around them and get
in abusive and violence marriage. Hence, urbanisation may influence people’s emotion and give rise
to criminal rates.

In conclusion, it is clearly stated that the disadvantages of urbanisation outweigh its

advantages as it lead to high unemployment rate, caused pollution and diseases as well as the crime
cases. Nevertheless, every problems in this world have its cure. For the sake of maintaining the
peace of our country, this problem should be resolve as soon as possible. As a suggestion,
government can provide more job opportunities to unemployed person and create an efficient
treatment of polluted resources so that the resources can be used again with good quality. I believe,
with excellent teamwork and spirit from the government and societies will bring our country
towards a better future.
