Lesson 7 - Releasing into the upper range 2

Intro
Utilizing the enhanced vocal fold strength gained from the cord closure
lessons and the improved diaphragm coordination gained from the Breath
pressure lessons, we're going to release into the upper range with more
sound.

"MUM"

Coordination - Don't worry about "singing". Think of clearly speaking the

tones on pitch; all we need is a clear, crisp, non-airy "mum".

Release into upper range, will maintaing solid cord closure

Conditioning - We can use this simple "mum" to strengthen the connection

between our chest voice and head voice. Keep the sound staccato (short,
crisp, and detached). Let the "M" at the beginning of "mum" launch your
sound forward naturally - don't push.
*Remember: What strengthens the voice is the act of blending, NOT
singing loudly.

When can I move on to the next lesson?

"Mum" is a common exercise. So, if you truly feel that you are already very
experienced, then you may move on. However, most vocalists should
spend at least 1 week practicing this lesson. Vocalizing on "Mum" is a great
practice exercise for building agility and coordination throughout the
registers. It's also a wonderful optional addition to your regular daily
warmup. You may find that the "mum" gives you greater resonance with
less effort.

Common Problems
Similar to our previous lesson: Don't squeeze the "mum" on the sustained
tones. Let the short, staccato, "mum" sounds establish the pressure for the
longer legato "mum" sounds. Allow that feeling to be your guide.
