Characters
Mrs.Dillingham Young/ Della; is a young affectionate woman who had
long brown hair that seems like a waterfall streaming till below her
knees. Della’s love is priceless for her husband Jim, and is dedicated to
their relationship.
Mr. James Dillingham Young: is a thin, drained 22 year old adult
employed for 30$ a week in a furnished apartment that costs 8$ a week
and with a wife to take care of. Jim is quiet, humble and loves his wife
with all his heart.
Mrs. Sofronie: is a huge, too white, cold eyed woman who works on hair
articles and bought Della’s hair.

 The setting of this short story is:

At Christmas eve, Mrs. James Dillingham Young is

frustrated to find out that she only had a dollar and eighty
seven cents to spare for a Christmas gift for her dear husband
Jim. So she tries to provide a solution and glances at her most
valuable possesion; her wonderfully long beautiful brown
hair, and sacrifices it to buy her Jim a gift worth his love.

After selling her graceful hair for twenty dollars, she raids
the town looking for a valuable gift and merely finds the
perfect one for Jim that best describes him. A stunningly

simple yet beautiful(valuable)chain for the gold watch Jim is

proud to own.
She arrives home, calms herself , prepares dinner for Jim and
waits until he comes home. When he enters the room, there
she was , Della strangely wrong. “Jim dear, you’d still love
me won’t you?” she asked with pleading eyes. She couldn’t
make out his expression, he was perplexed. He was slow but
calm to understand and accept that she cut her hair and sold
it.And then the gift in the wrapped paper explained it all.
In there was a beautifully crafted ornamental comb which he
had bought for her exceptionally long hair. She had been
longing for this item through the shop windows but never
thought of owning it cause it’d cost them a fortune. She was
delighted to see the gift but sad at the same time, then she
presented her gift, the gold chain. But the bottom line was
that he had sold his watch to buy the comb, and she had sold
her hair to buy him the chain.

Conflict
The conflict of this story was between Della and herself.
Theme
Make wise decisions and try not to control what you’re not
able to control.
My analysis
This popular short story is interesting as well as
disappointing because of the decisions the characters made
out of sacrifice. Overall the story teaches us by comparing
the wise gifts of the magi..
