LESSON PREVIEW
(Communication-Concept Dev’t)

Regular maintenance of tools and equipment is an important and necessary

activity. The term maintenance covers many activities, including inspection, testing
and replacement. It has a vital role to play in reducing the risk associated with
workplace hazards and providing safer and healthier working condition.

This lesson will provide you knowledge and skills on how to maintain
the cleaning tools and equipment used in household services.

READ AND STUDY

Maintenance of cleaning tools and equipment

Cleaning tools and equipment are widely used in household services and by
the housekeeping department in the hotels. Cleaning tools and equipment are
classified into two: electrical and manual.
LESSON 1 Module No. 1 Use of Cleaning Tools, Equipment, Supplies and Materials

Electrical Cleaning Equipment

1. Vacuum Cleaner- is a device that uses an air

pump to create a partial vacuum to suck up
dust and dirt, usually from floors and other
surfaces. The dirt is collected by either a dust
bag or a cyclone for later disposal.

2. Floor buffer- also known as a floor polisher or

floor burnishes. It is an electrical appliances that is
used to clean and maintain non-carpeted floors,
such as hardwood, marble, tiles or linoleum.

Correct Maintenance of Tools and Equipment

A further part of a health and safety strategy is to maintain tools and

equipment regularly. This helps to identify safety problems before they become a
serious hazard. Only qualified people should carry out the maintenance. They should
also keep records of their inspections.

Employers are the one that conduct Risk Assessment that cover the setting
up, use and maintenance of tools and equipment at work. The risk assessment must
identify the environments in which workers will use the tools and equipment; any
local conditions that may affect safety; and how the workers will actually use each
item in practice.

By limiting risks, employers have some control over potential hazards.

Specifically, employers should:

• Place guards on machinery to protect fingers and limbs.

• Ensure that system controls have appropriate warning devices.
• Insist staff wear personal protective clothing as necessary.
• Arrange for maintenance when equipment is safely shut down and not
in use.
General Rules in the Use of Cleaning Equipment

1. Check the electrical appliances and equipment before use. Never use
any appliance that is defective.
2. Handle equipment with care.
3. Clean and store equipment in their custodial room immediately after use.
4. Empty dust bags of dry vacuum cleaners before they overload and after
each use.
5. Follow manufacturer’s operating instruction.
LESSON 1 Module No. 1 Use of Cleaning Tools, Equipment, Supplies and Materials

6. Schedule regular check-up of equipment to prevent serious breakdown.

7. To avoid electric shock or short circuit, do not expose equipment to rain
or water.

Manual Cleaning Tools

1. Mop- a stick with soft material attached to
one end, especially used for cleaning floors.

Care and maintenance of mop- Washed it with

soapy water/ detergent. Tightly squeezed out,
shaken well to get rid of excess moisture, and
left it to dry to an open air.

2. Containers- There are different types of

containers used in household services.

- Bucket- are made of plastic or metal which

are primarily used to carry water, detergent
and chemical ions removing spills.

- Dust pan- a cleaning tool commonly used

to scoop the dirt and wastes on the floor.

Care and maintenance of containers- It must be

clean and dry before storing.

3. Broom- it is made of bundle of straws or twigs

attached to a long handle used for sweeping.
LESSON 1 Module No. 1 Use of Cleaning Tools, Equipment, Supplies and Materials

Care and maintenance of broom- Gently tapped

on a hard surface to loosen dust after the cleaning
process.

4. Duster- are made of soft cotton, flannel and

artificial feather mounted on a stick. It is used
to clean loose dust and wash various surfaces.

Care and maintenance of duster- Wash,

rinse and dry thoroughly after use.

5. Cleaning Cloth- is used to wipe the cleaning

tools and equipment.

Care and maintenance of cleaning cloth- Wash

in detergent, rinse and dry after use.
