Painting should only be done under the supervision of a

competent person
The supervisor in charge shall ensure that equipment is

maintained in safe and good working order
Breathable quality air, free from oil mist, moisture and toxic gas
3
shall be supplied to paint personnel
The workplace shall be a restricted area and a rope barricade
4
shall enclose it
Warning signs indicating “DANGER - PAINTING AREA” should
5
be posted on the barricade
Provide suitable materials to act as curtains (tarpaulins, plastic
6 sheeting etc.) to enclose the work area and protect the newly
painted surface until it is dry
If paint components are flammable, then no painting will be done
7
in the vicinity of electrical lighting and open electrical circuits
Provide suitable and secure covers to protect instruments,
8 gauges, airlines valves and other equipment which is not to be
painted
Establish a good housekeeping system to ensure that excessive
9 debris, paint containers and masking tape is removed as early as
possible, and in any case at the end of the days work
Painting within confined spaces or vessels shall always be
10
controlled by the work permit system
Material safety data sheets for each product held and observed.

Copies to be kept by painting supervisor
Symbolic signs for “NO SMOKING” and “NO NAKED FLAMES”
12
posted in areas where paint / flammable liquids in use
Unwanted flammable materials including paint thinners, rags and
cotton waste impregnated with flammable spirits or paint, are to
13
be kept in metal drums with close fitting lids at hazardous waste
storage area and disposed off in a safe manner
Painting safety procedure is available and communicated to
14
painting personnel
Suitable respirator used by painting crew to protect them from
15
hazardous solvent / paint vapours
