Module 1.1
DESCRIBING INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
THROUGH HISTORY

I. Course Outcome : CO1: Assess the impact of Science and Technology to the
flourishing of the human person in the society and to the
meaning of good life.

II. Learning Outcome : LO1.1: Describe the interactions between Science & Technology
and society throughout history.

III. Time Frame : Home-based (1.5 hrs.)

School-based (1.5 hrs.)

IV. Introduction

In this session, you will describe the historical interactions of S & T with society. Each
student will choose one common technology found in their respective homes and trace its
historical antecedents by drawing its corresponding timeline. They will then
classify the origins of their chosen technology as either Ancient, Middle Age or Modern
Age.
Below are key concepts for reading. Details of these concepts are discussed further in the
hand-outs/photocopies attached herein.

Science and Technology

Science is the pursuit of knowledge about the natural world through systematic observation
and experiments. Through science, we develop new technologies. Technology is the
application of scientifically gained knowledge for practical purpose. Scientists use
technology in all their experiments. S & T plays an important role in the development of
society as what it is today. By making life easier, science has given man the chance to
pursue societal concerns such as ethics, aesthetics, education, and justice; to create cultures;
and to improve human conditions. Science and Technology influences society through its

knowledge and world view. Scientific knowledge and the procedures used by scientists
influence the way many individuals in society think about themselves, others, and the
environment. The effect of science on society is neither entirely beneficial nor entirely
detrimental.

Historical Antecedents of Science and Technology

Ancient Times
Man began to utilize technology as early as the ancient times, with the utilization of stones,
iron, bronze as well as the early discovered metals in creating tools and weapons used for
hunting and gathering of food. Then came the different ancient civilizations, which had
their own technological legacy that helped shape society as what it is today. From the
Sumerians came the early writing system cuneiform and the wheel. The Babylonians have
their architecture defining Hanging Gardens, while the Egyptians have their papyrus and
hieroglyphics. Greeks have their own contribution with the water mill, the Romans have
their Colosseum and the Roman Numeral System, and the Chinese also became historically
significant with their gunpowder and their wonder, the Great Wall.

Middle Ages
Science and Technology became more conspicuous during the Medieval period, with
significant inventions such as the printing press, the microscope, the telescope and war
weapons. These technologies helped shaped the Scientific Revolution, which in turn, led
to the development of Science and Technology as what it is today.

Modern Ages
Technology has become more sophisticated with the modern times. Advancement in the
field of health (pasteurization), transportation (cars, airplanes, fossil fuels), infrastructure
(highrises, skyscrapers), and communication (computers, mobile phones, television).
These led to the development and the improvement on the quality of life in the society.
In retrospect, without these previous technologies, we won’t have the technologies that we
are using and enjoying right now.

VII. Learning Activities : Home-based

1. Browse the PowerPoint file on some examples of technologies

that were invented during specific stages of history, while
familiarizing the different periods of Science and Technology:
a. Ancient Times
b. Middle Ages
c. Modern Ages
2. Watch and listen to the video uploaded on our MU-
OLE/Group Page for the discussion on Timeline of Major
Scientific Inventions & Discoveries
3. Do “Activity 2: “Illustration of Historical Antecedents”

School-based

1. The teacher will check the output of the students on Activity

2, and then discuss the other important historical antecedents
which are considered the most important and revolutionary.
2. After that, the student will then read through the handouts,
“Chapter 1: Historical Antecedents in the Course of Science
and Technology”
3. Answer “Activity 1: Test”

VIII. Equipment : None

IX. Student Feedback : Your feedback is important. Please don’t leave this blank. This
portion will allow us to evaluate how this module is going. Your
feedback will help improve this module for future revision.
