DESCRIBING INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
THROUGH HISTORY
I. Course Outcome : CO1: Assess the impact of Science and Technology to the
flourishing of the human person in the society and to the
meaning of good life.
II. Learning Outcome : LO1.1: Describe the interactions between Science & Technology
and society throughout history.
IV. Introduction
In this session, you will describe the historical interactions of S & T with society. Each
student will choose one common technology found in their respective homes and trace its
historical antecedents by drawing its corresponding timeline. They will then
classify the origins of their chosen technology as either Ancient, Middle Age or Modern
Age.
Below are key concepts for reading. Details of these concepts are discussed further in the
hand-outs/photocopies attached herein.
Middle Ages
Science and Technology became more conspicuous during the Medieval period, with
significant inventions such as the printing press, the microscope, the telescope and war
weapons. These technologies helped shaped the Scientific Revolution, which in turn, led
to the development of Science and Technology as what it is today.
Modern Ages
Technology has become more sophisticated with the modern times. Advancement in the
field of health (pasteurization), transportation (cars, airplanes, fossil fuels), infrastructure
(highrises, skyscrapers), and communication (computers, mobile phones, television).
These led to the development and the improvement on the quality of life in the society.
In retrospect, without these previous technologies, we won’t have the technologies that we
are using and enjoying right now.
